.458 SOCOM, anyone?
« on: March 06, 2017, 11:25:04 AM »
Wondered if anyone here had personal experience with this caliber. I'll be using my 550b for loading this.

I've heard Redding sizing dies suggested by many on the 458socom forum, and the Lee FCD for crimping.

Looking to play with subsonic loads with my suppressor, but also considering properly designed rounds for hunting javelina and wild hogs in the future.  I'm looking forward to playing with the broad range of bullet weights. I wanted to explore different calibers available to the AR-15 platform....

Been in the 458 socom game for several years now and like it.  I suggest joining the 458 forum, i learned a lout there.  I run a 10.5 inch barrel with a Bowers vers50 silencer.  My most recent and impressive subsonic load utilizes a makers 500 grain subsonic expanding projectile. Also if your on facebook there is a 458 group with lots to learn from

Cool. THank you, I have just joined that forum. I have a SilencerCo Hybrid can coming, they say minimum barrel length is 16" but no explained why. Do you know why? I assume they are worried about baffle strikes from inadequate bullet stabilization from a short barrel.  Not sure if there is another reason...

Maybe that, but I suspect they are more worried about the higher pressures that an sbr length barrel causes. If running only subs I'd probably risk it but wouldn't attempt it with a short barrel with supersonic ammo.

very good, makes sense. Thank you. Until I'm more versed in this I will stick with the 16" barrel for now when suppressed.
