Round wire recoil spring in an SP-01???
« on: April 07, 2017, 01:46:59 PM »
SO as the title states:  I'm wondering if it's OK to run a round wire recoil spring (14lb CGW "Piano wire" variety...) in my SP-01.  The stock spring is of the flat-wound variety and while I can find a million and one threads discussing the WEIGHT, I don't see anything answering my question.  My concern is coil-bind and damage due to such an occurrence (I've seen first hand what this can do on both DH Mtn bikes and Off-road Race-Trucks in my life and I don't want to be HOLDING the device in question when it does LOL... I have a hell of a scar from when my DH bike's rear suspension blew up on me at close to 35mph on steep part of a course in a thicket of Cedar Trees... OUCH, that still hurts to think about).  So, yeah, I "fear" coil bind a wee bit LOL.

I also notice that when I put the 14lb CGW spring makes racking the gun feel like there isn't even a spring in there compared to the factory weight...  :o  I know people run much lower weight springs (and I've run lighter springs in nearly all of my Glocks minus the 10mm's in the past as well as other makes) but MAN it's a bit nerve-racking with it being that light aye, and that's only the 14lb spring, not an 11lb or even an 8lb like I've heard people running with gammer loads.  According to common wisdom though (not being snarky, I really do appreciate all the learning this site has helped me with) the 14lb spring should be about "perfect" for even Std. Press. 124gr defensive loads (or am I wrong about that too?) let alone 115gr plinking ammo.

Cheers

Nothing wrong with running round wire. The SP01 Shadow actually ships with a round reduced weight spring over a plastic guide rod.

The SP01 Stock recoil spring is MUCH heaver than the rest of the 75 series. Somewhere around 20-22lbs IIRC. Most folks run lighter springs to change the recoil impulse and quite frankly, make it easier to rack. A 14lb spring will be fine for any factory blasting ammo.

Side note: "gamer loads" aren't  far off from  bulk ammo. USPSA and IDPA have a  125 Power Factor Minimum   ( Velocity X Bullet Weight / 1000) for Minor. Most factory loads I've chrono'd are around 132-137pf . Most shooters I'm around load somewhere between 128 and 132 PF. My pet load with a 147gr bullet in front of Titegroup is around 130/131.

My initial response is it will work as expected. I believe 16lb or 18lb is the stock RS weight and feel it is fairly light.   I wouldn't go too light for a defensive gun. I plan to order the RS tuning pack from CGW for my SP-01 Tac since mine is a game gun.

With that said, give CGW a quick call. It will put your mind at ease.

CGW lists the SP-01 right under the description for the spring.

I realize your question refers to the SP-01, but I thought this would be a good opportunity to help grow the knowledge base for future readers. The P-07 and P-09 does require flat recoil springs, per Dave (Schmeky).

Thanks guys, I honestly must be blind because I ordered it from the "75/SP-01" section but I went back and looked and couldn't find the SP-01 listed specifically so, my bad but than you.  I also have a P-07 (my main CCW pistol) and I was concerned because, as stated above the P-07/09 twins DO in fact "need' the flat-wound spring so as I was planning on shooting today, I wanted to double-check.

I read the posts right before going out the door to the range for a session and decided to run the new springs.  I gotta say... it's pretty amazing.  I took all the stock parts in my gear-box but never needed them.  I was doing double taps at 15yds into almost one hole and even with the 15lb Main-spring and none of the FP/spring mods (I got too anxious to shoot it and didn't have the time to do the Ext. FP/RPFP spring swap but will this weekend) I had ZERO malfunctions, every primer went off and the pistol is just perfectly balanced in recoil/return to battery now (I've also got a recoil buffer pad in behind the RSA at the barrel-lug).  I almost can't shoot it fast enough...  Next up is the new Sights and FP mods this weekend and I've also got a few parts for the P-07 to get in there so it'll be a weekend of shooting and tinkering.  I'm not gonna complain.

Cheers

Wolff Springs lists the 16# recoil spring as stock for full size 75s.

16# is heavy for typical big box store range ammo or minor power factor loads.

I use the CGW 14lb and believe it to be of superior quality. After many tests shooting rapid, fire this along with a 13lb MS, ext FP and RP FP spring seems to be the sweet spot for my particular SP-01 Tactical 9mm pistol.

Additionally I've found that during rapid fire, using the metal or SS guide rod, my rapid fire rounds do not dip as much they do with the plastic or Delrin guide rods. This may be due to a bouncing effect with these I'm  not sure.  Each pistol may be a little different. YMMV
