Had to do it--loaned out a Sig instead of a CZ
« on: October 20, 2017, 07:11:42 AM »
A friend visited last week and we went to the range and I asked him to shoot my star P-09 at 100 yards.  He only has experience with a SIG P-938 and a Ruger 22/45, and no experience with a red dot.  He has visited and observed two IDPA matches, so he wanted to try a heavy 4.5" full size gun with open sights.  I could have loaned him my second P-09, but, frankly, I don't want to be without them right now.  Instead, I loaned him my SIG P-226 Stainless Steel Elite, the best SIG full size pistol I've shot, and my former IDPA pistol.  It was the last SIG I bought, but I still use it when getting new shooters something very soft to shoot and easy to hold steady.  I told him he could buy two plastic CZ's with the same money he would spend for a P-226 SSE, but that they might not fit him so well or be as comfortable to shoot, at least initially.

I'll see him again in a few weeks.  The P-09 loaner might be next for this fellow, then we'll see what he buys.  He will probably want to try a P-320 or some other Sig model, my bet.  Or maybe he will offer me a lot of money for my P-226.  Not sure I'll take it.  I should, however.  Then I could buy two full size P-10's when they come out, put a red dot on one and leave the open sights on the other.

The P226 SSE is my one and only Sig. I will never sell it.  How could you sell such a great handgun.

:) :) I may have to have visitation and range trip rights, IF I can sell it at all.  I'll first see if I can get him interested in a P-07 or a P-10C instead.

My only Sig is a somewhat recently acquired P226 ASE which is the alloy stainless elite.

Nice! Was that DA on the first shot, or cocked for all?

I'm pretty sure all of those were single action only, including the first shot, although I did a lot of shooting from a draw in double action mode and was quite comfortable with doing so.

Keep in mind that that photo was of the BEST group I shot that day, not the average!!  Like maybe a statistical aberation group.  I can't do that on demand, believe me.

Any tips on how to reduce the DA on a P226?

Install a reduced power hammer spring. Wolf makes a 17 pound spring that will really improve the DA trigger. You can try lighter, but I've found below 16 pounds causes the occasional misfire.

Thanks. That?s about all I?ve read so far on the matter. Most say not even to go below 18#

The trigger bars are rough on the sides and rub on the frame.  Flatten it out with a new stone.  Polish the contact points on the hammer and trigger bar, but don't remove much material.  I think I have 17 lb hammer springs in three P-226's with no problems except S&B primers.  Also the sides of the hammers are sometimes a little rough, flatten and deburr with a stone.

The double action pull can be quite good if all the parts are smooth, the frame is smooth, and you use the lighter hammer spring.

Excellent shooting, especially on a cold day!

Probably not!!  And I didn't offer him the $400 (slightly modified) nail driver.  Instead he got the presentable $1200(?) safe queen.

I wouldn't take $1200 even for my open sighted P-09 or retired P-07 bullseye pistol.  Both are statistical aberrations.   :) :)
