P-07 Back Strap Issues
« on: June 20, 2014, 09:42:11 PM »
I purchased a new P-07 earlier this week and it came with the small backstrap installed. I don't have small hands, and I'm having an aggravatingly difficult time trying to change the backstrap out. I cannot, for the life of me, remove the pin put through the backstrap and spring. I've broken various tools trying to do it. Granted, I'm thoroughly reassured that the handgun is tough now, but I'd appreciate some help as to how to get that pin out. Is there a specific technique I'm missing? I watched a video of a backstrap change on a P-09 and this guy's pin popped out no problem. I can get mine to move a couple of millimeters (2-3) and then it just gets stuck. This occurs in both directions.

Any suggestions?

Probably because the hammer spring is putting tension on the part that the pin goes through, and the holes aren't lined up. Put the gun on a table so the base of the grip is facing down, and push down so the lanyard hole is forced up into the grip a bit. That lines up the holes and the pin will slide out.

Sorry, this is really hard to explain for some reason!

Ah, so there is some spring business going on. I don't have a lanyard loop, though (got the updated version), so I'll have to find another way to put pressure on the spring. I tried it with my finger, but it's all flat there and I'm having trouble making anything budge. I appreciate the advice! It helps to know what's going on internally.

I have a flat mainspring plug as well, I just use the corner of a table, corner of a mag laying on the table, or something else that is raised slightly so I can press the butt down with one hand while pushing the pin out with the other. It should slide right out once the tension is off (make sure the hammer is resting/decocked to help relieve the spring as well).

And watch out that it doesn't spring back at you(mainspring plug).
I am putting a lanyard loop on mine next time I take it apart.

Awesome, I appreciate the tips. Now I can put the right backstrap on for my big spidery hands. Thanks a lot

I'm bumping this back up.

I cannot reinstall my pin in my p07. The holes do not line up when I push the pistol down onto a table. The plunger part sits further up inside the pistol grip so it's impossible for me to install. Is there a tool that anyone has used or bought to make this physically possible to install?

Or who can I send my gun to to install my bleeped pin?

Get a large piece of wood put it on your workbench get a screw with a head that's just a little bit smaller than the black plug. Screw the screw into the wood almost all the way down to the head of the screw. Make sure your gun is unloaded now grabbing the gun from the top push the plug down onto the screw head it will push the black plug up into the gun maybe about a 16th of an inch at the same time use a punch just a little bit smaller then the PIN and feeling the pin move push the pin out leaving the punch in the hole. Keeping pressure on the plug on the screw slowly pull out your punch and then slowly lift the gun up to release the black plug, be careful or it will fly away.

I used a AAA battery to push it up, the + terminal gives it enough reach

The screw head works great.  I have one screwed into the front of my work bench.  I just hold the gun from the top like you're going to use it like a hammer.

Push the plug against the head of the screw while you have a punch against the pin.  You have to vary the pressure to get the plug to 'float' in the hammer strut access hole.

Once you develop a method like this, it shouldn't take more than about 30 seconds to change the back strap.

If you get a plug with a lanyard Loop it takes about 15 seconds to remove it.

I was upset thinking I'd scratch up my brand new member of the family, and have a 3/4 inch thick bench top. I drilled a hole down about a 1/2 inch and cut a piece of dowel to drop in the hole just long enough to push up the main spring plug .
