Magpul Hunter 700 Stock first impressions
« on: October 28, 2017, 11:34:54 AM »
I?ve had my Remington 308 Tactical w/ Hogue stock for 12 months and shot over 450 rounds. It has a 20? heavy barrel and I mainly use it for the range. I like to consider it utilitarian except for the weight. Made a lot of small groups on paper at 100 yards and had perfect success on steel at 200-500. It?s a $600 rifle w/ a $400 scope so I thought a $300 stock was fitting. I needed to decrease bipod flex and wanted to gain a detachable mag.

It was easy to install and headed to the range to see how it fit me. Conditions were good so I shot 1000 yard steel to complete my 2017 goals for this rifle. I was so excited to be on the 1000 yard range that I forgot to pay attention to the details of the stock. I think the fact that it drew no attention is a positive. I then went to the 500 yard tactical deck to critique the new setup.

I?m loving the wide flat forearm. The pistol grip angle works for me. It?s probably a good transition from a traditional hunting style. I think the grip has a fair amount of aggressive texture. That and the pinky rest / hook works great for me to pull against my shoulder. The flat area under the butt stock is a new element for me but I love it now. It?s great for settling in to the bench. The short steep angles at each end of this flat area are great for that last minute elevation adjustment in your scope. The cheek rest is fine but cold and hard. Maybe that?s good but I?m no expert. I?m just trying to have fun and crush my buddies. The butt plate / pad is pretty great.

I just ordered a magpul mlok bipod / sling stud so I haven?t tried the bipod yet. Even if I don?t love the bipod setup I think I will still love the stock.

The Magpul 5 round magazine seems great. It?s plastic against plastic so there?s that feel that I don?t love. I think I will like the dependability and availability. It was definitely easy to research, purchase and install. I read a spec that it will take up to 2.86? cartridge length. SAAMI max for 308 is 2.810 and thats what I usually shoot. I test loaded the mag with some 308 Tipped Match Kings at 2.88 and it worked fine but seemed maxed out for sure. I usually load and shoot one round at a time so I tested that. Dropping one round into the receiver on top of the magpul follower was great. Much better than OEM.

I wish it came with any way to attach a sling. It?s weird that it has 1 ambi sling point on the back end but nothing forward. It also has 1 ambi pocket to to install a QD socket but nothing forward. So nothing will match here. It does however have pre marked points to drill and tap for a traditional stud. I guess that?s good but I probably wouldn?t like to continue that tradition just now.

I love the look! Was going to go with the same stock for my 7mm mag but decided to go with a classic walnut stock, then I added the detachable Magpul magazine well it turned out great. I really like Magpul products.

Nice stock for the money. I have them on a Remington VTR in 223 and a Ruger 10/22. Love the interchangeable riser and grip angle.
