TSO Must Haves
« on: April 21, 2018, 08:55:31 PM »
Hello all,

I have a TSO in .40 on the way. Just wondering what you guys consider to be the must-have upgrades if any? Also what spring combinations are most of you running? I will be using Federal's syntech 165 gr ammo which has a power factor of 173ish.

I've been shooting it stock for the last 2 years.  This year I'm going to try some LOK grips and Sebo extended safeties.  Main goal is to see if I can get more support hand traction.

EDIT: CZC extended basepads and spring/follower kits were upgraded before I'd even shot it

Look into a shadow 2 safety or the cz custom extended safety.
Some extend base pads.
There?s not really much needed to be add gun its a beast out the box

I would say a "must have" is different grips. The stock ones are just too smooth IMO. I went with LOK grips. The other things I have done are not considered "must haves" but have helped: Springer base pads, shadow 2 extended safety and I went with a lighter recoil spring.

I actually slightly increased the trigger pull but that isn't a must have.

I installed the CZ Custom Extended safety and springer extended base pads with grams followers.  They hold 20 (40S&W) now and are perfect for USPSA.

I haven't done anything else aside from shoot the crap out of it, just over 2000 down the pipe.  Not a single gun related failure to date.

I want to try the Henning grips but they don't offer a short version.  I need to call them to see if they will modify a set for the TSO.

Cheers,
Toby

Just go to the range and shoot it. Based on that range trip, determine if you really need to change anything.

Heres what I did: Additioanl magazines. When I shot them for the first time the base plates started walking off. I loaded them to 5, 10 & 20 with the results were worse when they had less ammo in them. This is with the factory plastic base plate, not the TSO plates. I replaced them all with Springer plates (5 140mm & 3 stock size).

Above is all I would consider needed, everything else is just cause: I was ok with factory magwell and grip, but I just didn't like the color and swapped it out because of that. I'm still waiting on custom Lok grips. I have a flat trigger not yet installed, but it will be eventually. I also didn't install the large safety yet, but after my first USPSa match that's going on for a better seating of my thumb. I also have a DPM recoil Spring that will go on after my second USPSA match because I need some time with it before a match.

Please check you rear sight screws as they tend to walk off.

I'm having the reset shortened soon. It feels a little too long for my liking.

If you're going to be using it in matches, the first thing on your list should be magazines and 140mm base pads.

After that, buy a few different spring weights and tune them to your specific ammo.  IIRC, I'm running a 12lb for my .40 upper and a 10lb for my 9mm practice upper.  Some people change their hammer spring weight as well, but I never found it necessary.

I also added the CZ Custom wide safety and IPSCAlex thumb rest to mine, because I like having the extra real estate for my thumbs.

I shoot my TSOs in USPSA so here's my setup
  • CZC base pads with Grams followers, this gets 20 in the mag reliably
  • Shadow 2 extended safety on left and thin on right
  • Lok palmswell bogies
  • 12/13# recoil spring
  • spare slid stop and TRS in the range bag

For my TS Blue, I added a Shadow 2 thumb safety, which has a higher thumb shelf like the CZ custom wide one but not as massive/wide, and is flat on the right side so it doesn't interfere at all with my shooting hand.  Highly recommended.

I would recommend a pair of G10 grip panels if you're going to be shooting outside this spring/summer as aluminum can get super hot.

I made some few changes. I used the old over travel and pretravel trigger screws and they tend to walk out after only a few shots (5-10) at the range yesterday so I caution using those. I'm going to the range again today to test it out, but I know I will have to take the gun apart again and install the screws that came with it. The CZC extended safety and that's a godsend.

Because of the issues with the trigger I did not fully test out the DPM recoil spring but the few shots (20) were an improvement. I hope the adjustments I made hold up and I can give a better review on the need for these items.
