CGW Extended Firing Pin
« on: March 15, 2018, 12:08:32 AM »
Hey guys,

I bought a 61050 Extended Firing Pin from CGW for my Cajunized (2/2015) SP-01 as I started having a few primer failures to ignite on S&B 115gr ammo on a recent class.  I estimate I had about 5-6 such failures over 650-675 rounds fired.  The few rounds I recovered had definite firing pin dimples in the primer.  Too bad I threw them away, as I should have saved them to try in a different gun.  S&B ammo had been very reliable before for us and my wife's CZC Shadow had only one such failure over a similar round count.

It may have been the ammo as my brother shooting in the same class with his XD9 also had one similar failure although we never recovered his un-ignited round, but mine was having the most.

So I bought the extended firing pin from CGW expecting to see a visibly longer pin and while installing it, I compared it with the old one:

the old one is on the left, the new one is on the right.

Should the extended firing pin be visibly longer than the old one?  Or is it something only a micrometer can determine?  The gun has shot about an estimated 3000-3500 rounds on the old firing pin.  I looked at my old CGW build receipt from 2015, it did not specify an extended firing pin; so I assume it is the factory firing pin.

Should I just install the new one?  The next time I will be shooting that many rounds will be the next class in May, and I'm hoping David and Scott will have my new S2 ready by then.

Here are some thoughts/observations on the matter......

It would seem that the 'extended' part is on the back end.

Much appreciated!  You know, I didn't bother looking at the tail end LOL

Nice pics from the other post.  Thanks!
