Stock CZ 19 rd mag drops vs Mec-Gar 19 rd drops
« on: March 25, 2018, 12:55:41 AM »
This has been discussed before,  but I'm hoping someone has come up with a solid "fix".
Shooting a 9mm 75 Shadow with all the goodies installed.
For my mag changes at matches and/or range practices,  the stock CZ 19 rd mags will usually hang up and need a light pull to get it to drop.  The Mec-Gars always drop free.  New springs, old springs, +10% springs make no difference.  Filthy pistol or spotless pistol,  makes no difference.  ALL the SAME 124 gr 9mm ammo or other,  make no difference

I usually plan my shoot to start with the Mec-Gars and the last mag is the stock CZ mag.  Today at a match I was held up at the 'make ready'  and screwed up and inserted a CZ mag first.  Same won't drop free on the first mag change.  :P
I was irritated.

The Mec-Gar mag 'nose' in front is slightly more rounded than the CZ mags and fit/clear the frame opening just slightly better.  Both mags' retention cuts seem to be good on both types.

Has anyone come up against this same problem and found a way to cure the CZ Mag problem other than just buying more Mec-Gar mags?

Have you been able to decipher what part the magazine is hanging up 1SOW?
Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

I have the same issue with factory CZ mags.  They work fine with the exception of the occasional instance where they don't drop free.  I Finally decided to put all the factory mags back in the boxes that my CZs came in and use my Mecgars for IDPA matches.  The Mecgars are cheaper and I don't mind getting them scuffed up, stepped on, and abused.

Steel ,  this same  issue has come up with others here.

Tok,  when you do a fast mag change the quick press on the mag release is related to the problem.  One time (a year or two back?) Stuart mentioned bending one of the mag release spring tangs 90 degrees so the release can only be pushed in "X" distance deep.  Pushing it too hard too fast caused the release to contact the mag and make It hang.

As I mentioned above,  the two mag nose shapes are not identical.  The upper front M-G mag seems to allow a very  little more clearance from the curved portion of the front grip strap  than the CZ mag.. The MG mag nose curve is  almost radiussed from the same point as the frame.  The CZ mag nose curve isn't the same as the frame.  It's closer to frame contact at some points,  so I suspect just a little less forgiving of the CZ mag.than the MG.

My findings above are based on non-scientific data.  That's why I asked if anyone has found a practical  "fix".

I don't have a standard 75 but in all my 75 variants I've never had a mag not drop free.

On my TSO I ordered 3 extra mags (only option is OEM).  During fitting I noticed that at least two were hanging up due to width.  On the new mags, the mag bodies were just slightly too wide near the middle of the mag.  They were hanging up on the grip panels/frame just enough to not drop free.  So I took a quik clamp and squeezed the sides of the mag gently until it wouldn't hang up anymore.  You could use a leather/rubber faced bench vise or whatever you have.  I didn't want to nick the steel with anything metal.  After squeezing them they drop free and have worked flawlessly since.

I'm not sure if your this would fix your issue but it fixed mine.  I'm sure you could squeeze front to back at the nose or whatever is needed.

Cheers,
Toby

Toby,  sorry I'm so late replying.
Are those 40 cal mags you're modifying?  Reminds me of shooter friends having to "fit" all the STI 40 cal comp. pistol mags.

I'll take some measurement of the 9mm CZ mags' "thickness" and compare it with the Mec_Gars.    Just to note:  the 16 round CZ mags drop free,  but I seldom use those 6 mags. ;D ::)

1SOW,

Yes they were 40 TS mags.

It was like they were bloated and I had to squeeze them back to being a square/ rectangle shape.   Still dropping free after a couple thousand rounds through them.

Cheers,
Toby
