Installed KAK flash can a while ago, did I mess up?
« on: August 29, 2018, 01:03:58 AM »
So a while ago, I bought a KAK flash can for my Scorpion. I proceeded to remove the stock flash hider, then screwed on the flash can, and that was that. Recently I've been collecting parts and researching how to build an AR-15, and I've realized that when installing muzzle devices on an AR-15 barrel, it's advisable to put the barrel in a vise, be very careful with the torque, and use things like crush washers on the muzzle device.

I did nothing like that on the Scorpion, just removed the stock muzzle device and screwed the flash can on. Could I have caused any problems? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Please don't put the evo barrel or any other directly in a vice. John is correct the kak doesn't require any where near the torque an ar birdcage does with a crush washer.

Did you use a lot of torque when you screwed the flash can on?

By a lot, I mean...well...a lot?

You do not have to exert as much pressure on a flash can to time and torque a flash can up enough that I would worry about damage to the receiver.

I would also not use a crush washer with this particular type of muzzle device because it can cause a misalignment and may could cause the bullet to strike the internal cone.  Just let the muzzle device time up against the shoulder of the barrel.  Snug it down pretty good by hand, and check it every now and then.

I'm basing my opinion on years of designing and building firearm suppressors, and assuming the kac flash can is made similar to the Colt CAR moderator and the Noveske Flaming Pig.

Whew, that's a relief. I screwed it on and hand tightened it but really didn't screw that hard. Here's a link to the KAK flash can, it's basically a screw on metal tube https://www.kakindustry.com/kak-industry-flash-can. So I guess I'm ok, thanks!
