Heft

We expect certain things to have a certain heft. We look at an object; we think about what it's purpose is; and we decide how much we expect the thing to weigh in order to feel right in our hands. We do this many times each day:  toothbrushes, forks, pens, car keys, and all sorts of tools. We decide how we are going to go about eating food based upon how much heft a piece of it has.

It would seem obvious that folks who visit a forum dealing with compact guns have given considerable thought to the subject of heft. On this particular forum, a couple of pounds is the sweet spot.  We know that some gun that weighs little more than a handful of marshmallows (and even looks like something made from marshmallow) is just not going to make us very happy.

I guess you can tell that I'm getting all excited over the 32.8 perfect ounces of steel that is on its way to me in a FedEx box:   a CZ 75 Compact ? 9mm pistol.    For sure I've read all the stories about its legendary quality and performance, but for now I'm anticipating that delightful heft.

There is something satisfying about heavy all metal pistols.

It's more common for me to get this sort of reaction whenever I speak of heft:

Lots of "love" here for CZ Compacts.

But you probably won't get every one to agree on frame material, safety or decocker, etc., etc.

I'm with you on the safety models.  All of mine are either safety model CZ75 Compacts or the Omega P01's with the safeties installed.

While I don't really notice a weight difference between the steel framed CZ75 Compact and the aluminum framed P01 Omega what I do notice is the grooves that run up/down the front and back of the frame on the P01's and how it feels in my hand.  When I pick up the P01 I immediately realize it's a P01, not a CZ75 Compact because of the way it feels in my hand.

I recently stopped carrying my 2 year old CZ75 Compact in favor of a black P01 Omega because of the feel.  They work the same, I just like the way the P01 feels better.

I converted my CZ75 Compact to CZ85 controls and I like it a lot.  It was a fun project.  It is 100% reliable and it could be just a little more accurate for my preferences.

The ammo I carry in both is the same, 115 grain hollow points over a compressed charge of Blue Dot powder, so they "bark" when the trigger is pulled and I really can't feel the difference between the heavier compact and the P01.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Really like my compact. It works very well like most CZ's.

Imagine how successful a company would be if it could accurately predict what it's customers liked to hold in their hands.

Even though I'm a Vietnam veteran, I have neither lots of experience with different guns nor have I shot thousands of ammunition rounds.  But every gun I've ever held then or hunted with since has had a manual safety.  I know that there is something I must do before taking a shot.   It just makes no sense for someone like me to get a gun that might confuse that vital instinct. This does not mean that I cannot appreciate some entirely new technology.

My classic 75 Compact is a dream. Converted it to SAO with a flat trigger and did a bunch of upgrades. Carried it for years and shot my first USPSA match with it. I just have some touch ups to do to to my frame mods and it will go off to get Hard Chromed.

You?ll love yours and don?t be afraid to ask about any aspects you may want to improve or upgrade.

As with any steel pistol of heft, a good quality belt and how you carry it, will make all the difference.

However I've not decided to give up my original aluminum frame cajunized P-01. Coupled with a good holster I sometimes forget it's there.

Now for the range, I enjoy my SP-01 and Shadow SP-01 orange. But dang that aluminum frame is nice for carry.
