CZ97BD Being Retrofitted with Earlier-style Rubber Grips
« on: October 26, 2018, 03:37:37 PM »
Overcoming long reluctance to abandon the sassy/sexy/flashy/techy thin aluminum "cheese grater" grips that currently come stock on CZ 97 pistols, I've chosen to revert to the earlier design rubber grips.
https://cajungunworks.com/product/19119-full-size-oem-rubber-grips-97bbd/
A key motivator was the insight, described in Ontological Certitude,
https://czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=99762.msg769614#msg769614
that the grip cross section of the global standard Colt 1911 pistol was optimized without respect to the "packaging constraints" imposed by double stack magazine width: it uses near-elliptical camber (side bulge) of the grips to help fill the metacarpal joint trough inherent to the gripping of a pistol.
The realization also came slowly, through the process of handling numerous pistols in gun shops, that the CZ 2075 RAMI with extended 14 round magazine and Colt 1911 heritage (via the CZ.40B whose "exterior similarity" was agreed to comport with the 1911) had many "close but no cigar" competitors in terms of the nebulous but all-important attribute I'll call "feel" in the hand. Going back to the extended-mag RAMI was always like "Ahhh..." -just right, Goldilocks-style, and the side camber of these near-perfect grips is a key part.
I love the feel of the 97BD in the hand, but the flatness of the stock "thin aluminum" grips gives it a kind of single-stack "feel," a step down from the global benchmark CZ 75 family as typified by my new SP-01 Tactical suppressor-ready.
I recognize that the showy "cheese grater" texture of the "thin aluminum" grips represents a credible effort in terms of grip texture, but again, "close but no cigar" in comparison with the similarly diamond patterned but optimally tacky (yet wear resistant) rubber material of the 75 series and subsequently the earlier 97.
It is, however the combination of material, texture, and contour that makes CZ 75 pistols the ergonomic global standard. Stippled plastic pistols, roller skate tape, what-have-you, just don't get there. And the dazzling "thin aluminum" grips, however pretty, also don't, I now realize, measure up. I want the best for Homeboy, and for myself in the deal. I'm willing to sacrifice pretty for best function, with ergonomic "feel" and lateral grippability key elements of said best function. I've taken the plunge.

nearly all of my CZ pistols wear the factory rubber grips

I will be adding them to a Witness Match .45 (a friend did this with his Elite Match 9mm) and trimming the standard CZ 75 grips to fit a TacSport.

Too bad they don't make the rubber grips for the vz82/CZ83.  >:(

I got the rubber grips for my 97BD from the CZ-USA store, mostly because of my oversized hands just never could get comfortable with those skinny aluminum stocks that came with the pistol.  Wouldn't mind an even thicker grip but these are working pretty well enough.

Yup, I even fitted the right side of my Shadow 2 with a CZ75 rubber grip. Just one side, though.  I still like the mag release on the left side easily reachable with the stock aluminum grip.

The rubber grips are an improvement over the OEM aluminum grips. However , they lack much of the palmswell that feels so good on the SP01.
I have a set of Nills on mine that feel amazing but are only suitable for Bullseye shooting. LOK has palm swell bogies available for the 97 now, those will be going on mine next.

The earlier-design 19119 rubber grips arrived timely from CGW, but unfortunately I couldn't mount them until waiting for a second order for a pair of the rubber grip-specific 28 Grip Screw,
https://cajungunworks.com/product/28-grip-screw-oem-phillips-head/
-which perhaps I should have known but it would have been nice if they'd have made mention, either in Additional Information or Related products, on the grips webpage
https://cajungunworks.com/product/19119-full-size-oem-rubber-grips-97bbd/
-where (as of this writing, 10 days after an email suggesting such a webpage upgrade might be of value both for customer service and website credibility remains unanswered) no such mention can be found.

No big whoop, only an extra $8.00 postage and I do remain grateful that CGW carries the grips at competitive price, and the screws at market-sustainable price. Also remain CGW fanboy for the excellence they offer us.

The upgrade from the "cheese grater" (CGW terminology, love it!) flat aluminum grips is tremendous.
The curvature (or "palm swell" -thanks Earl https://czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=100438.msg775902#msg775902) was less than I'd hoped based on my 2075 RAMI and 75 SP-01 Tactical, but still a significant improvement. This, in combination with the improved tractive characteristics of the rubber material, makes a world of difference.

I note with interest that the "grid" is noticeably finer on the 97 grips in comparison with those of my 2075, with the 75 grid about halfway in between. I made a PowerPoint slide to illustrate the difference but it appears more significant to the eye than in a photo for some reason.

If anyone knows of a source for factory-like rubber 97 grips with palm swell like the 2075 (ala. Colt 1911) and 75 please advise! My size XL/XXL glove hands are now hooked on palm swell to fill the metacarpal trough, especially for the relatively more "single stack" feeling 97.

The factory 97 rubber grips are perfect. Too bad they don't make the same profile for the 75. I'm not a fan of palmswells myself.

Evidently an even earlier (original?) issue featured increased palm swell but was flattened to what is now the 19119.
https://czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=91858.msg699781#msg699781 (tnx, tdogg)
-which works well for some

If anyone has the (earliest issue?) greater palm swell rubber CZ 97 grips going unused for having been replaced with something sexier, please PM me, I'd like to buy them from you! Please note that I'm NOT looking for the 19119 style which can currently be readily purchased at CZ-USA and CGW.

I bought my 97 BD"e" from CGW in 09/2016. The gun is absolutely a dream to shoot. At that time I put the word out for a pair of the original rubber grips with the palm swell for the 97. I had an ad here in the classified and on Armslist. I had no luck finding a pair. Maybe you'll have better luck. I ended up putting the Hogue wraparound grip on. They do not have the palm swells, but are better than the aluminum grips that came with it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

1) 1st gens came with medium-tinted wooden grips (this is a fact, still use them);

2) There was a set of CZ-USA rubber grips offered relatively briefly about 8-10 years ago (not sure about the dates); and

3) I bought a set of CZ-USA rubber grips a few years ago, but I'm not sure if this is identical to the one offered previously.  I thought I would like them better than the OEM wood grips (since I use the rubber ones exclusively on the 75 series pistols), but I don't see much difference.

I think you mean metacarpals.  Unless you are shooting with your feet.

Oh, man*, TripppleP -you got me! Good call. I've been working for years engineering the components for 1st prototypes of Full Suspension Footwear (www.giantstepfootwear.com), not paying much attention to the rest of our incredibly-engineered anatomy.

Thanks much; I'll edit the text for intended appendage naming.
Never got to where I could hit anything with a two-footed grip; big toe doesn't fit the trigger guard quite right, always pushed left...   8)

I agree with you there.  I shot an 83 in .380 and an 82 in 9x18 a few times, and I would have bought one if I had the money back then.  Hakan Pek used to make really nice grips for these, but I lost track of him.  The 82/83 is very underrated.

EDIT:  Talk about karma...  I was browsing the boards and saw that Hakan has resurfaced recently as well...

A quick walk down the CZ isle at my local range / GS a P0-1 Tac Supressor ready in urban gray grabbed my Visa card and would not let go  I have no plans for the hushpuppy but like the extra length on barrel and it came with those same CZ rubber swell grips out of six the only one that came that way  I opted for the CZ rosewoods although the red on gray looked pretty bleep good it did not feel as good as the rubber ones and the lighter weight frame the rubber seems to soak things up just better .

My 2018 97b came with the 2x4 woodies and 3 dot cheapies not sure why but was glad to get the gun just the same I ended up with a set of 1/2 checkered Walnuts from
grips4you and like them plenty they fill my hand and cover a bit more frame they just feel good like my ol 210 I guess  miss that one..........

The Rubber's are back on the P0-1
