Generally speaking, you will only get absolute cowitness with a milled slide. With dovetail mounts (and systems that use adapter plates) the optic just sits too high.
Dots can be a boon for those with eye challenges ... Just be aware that there is a real learning curve for most folks.
Anyone who has shot with irons for some time tends to do a fair amount of unconscious adjusting as they present the gun. This generally works but allows for a sloppier presentation ;-)
This gets harder to pull off with an optic because there is less room for error before you lose the dot in the window... many find they have to clean up their presentation to consistently see the dot when they press out.
That isn't a negative, mind you. It all leads to better shooting in the end but it may take some patience and work to get there.
