Recommended CZP09 holster for first timer
« on: December 09, 2018, 08:37:19 AM »
New to pistols. My first one is the CZp09. May carry it, but regardless want a holster just for fun day at a range or out in the country shooting.

So what types of holsters for this gun do you recommend

What manufacturers and models of holsters do you recommend

Anything you recommend to avoid

Thanks

For my P09, I have 2 holsters.

The Highwayman OWB pancake style from Privateer Leather. Very good, comfortable holster; secures the the gun well.

Also have a baldetech OWB I used in some IDPA matches. Very happy with it too

That said, holsters depend upon a good sturdy belt and upon the purpose you intend.
Like a midget at a urinal, I'll have to keep on my toes

Don't buy the Hogue OWB Thumb Release holster, it is Junk. I included it when I traded in my P-09.

I have a Comp-Tac International for my P-07 that will also fit a P-09, I got it as a range holster and like it a lot.  Can be set up as either a belt or paddle, and also includes a drop/offset piece and all the hardware needed for the different configurations.  Adjustable retention and cant, too.  Wish they made one for the 97.  Later.

All depends on your intention & if you plan on keeping the gun and how much you want to invest in a holster. For basic "range" holster maybe a USPSA/IDPA match get a Bladetech, fair price and good solid holster for the $$$ If you decide to expand your use and want something viable for both carry/training/range use get a Highnoon Holster! It is my go too holster company, there is a wait but its worth it in my eyes. Tons of options and prices and it seems like they are always running some kind of sale & that's a good thing, LOL Other guys will chime in I'm sure with other good info.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  :)
Sounds like I need more education.

Because in the suggestions there were some things that I didnt understand or when I followed the suggestions, those manufacturers had terms I didnt understand but needed to so I could select a model.

I understand outside the belt verses inside, concealed verses open carry. I understand the different locations a gun can be carried and the materials used to make different kinds.

1. What is a range holster and what makes it different in functionality from other holsters?
2.  What is drop offset
3. What is a USPSA/IDPA holster and what makes it different in functionality from other holsters?
4. Why wouldn't a person use a competition holster for every day?
5. What is a tactical holster and what makes it different?
6. What is the downside of a holster that can be worn inside or outside the waist band?
7. Some have diffent methods of keep the pistol in its holster, which also makes it different in how you get it out, and styles or types better than others.
8. What are key safety features of holsters?

Ah, all good questions!
1) Range holster is something that you would use just for the Range and normal training/shooting. You would practice draws, reholstering etc. In general getting, you use to handling a pistol correctly/safely & not picking it up from the table every time you go to shoot.
2)Drop Offset is for Competition typically as far as I know, helps with a faster draw which equals faster on target etc.
3)Typically a Range Holster could be used for IDPA/USPSA but then you might want the drop offset for a faster presentation of the gun,, depends on where ya want to be I guess.
4) A competition holster "could" work just not the best option if you were trying to carry concealed. Again depends on type/environment/clothing.
5) Tactical Holster could be a Drop Leg holster or a concealed carry holster. You see LEOs/SWAT guys with drop leg holsters sometimes, look em up,, kinda cool but normally not practical for normal range/concealed carry use.
6) No downside really depends on what you want and like. Both are viable options if its what you want.
7)LEOs have different types of retention us "normal" peeps don't normally need, that type of retention is a safety thing mostly. I'm not a fan of buttons or levers to push on any holster but that's me, you need to decide for yourself on that one. Look and check out different styles. Normal tension fit is more than adequate for most people when it comes to range use of concealed carry.
8)Safety of holsters,,Hmmmm, many I guess. The gun is on your side not just laying on the bench or table, YOU are in control 100% of the time ! That is a big factor for me, having a gun laying on the table/bench is just NOT a good thing. It depends on your range and where you shoot but having control is paramount in any Range Trip! The actual safety of the holster can vary on how it holds/retains the gun and there are many types/styles but as with any firearm, we/you are the biggest factor.
Well hope I helped at least a little ! I'm sure more peeps will be along and contribute also. Feel free to ask more questions if needed.  :D

I saw a guy in civilian clothes open carrying a Glock in a thigh rig recently, in a Walmart parking lot.

Anyway, certain holsters lend themselves to open carry, concealed carry, competition, law enforcement, military, etc.  Material, carry position, attachment types, retention methods, etc. can all factor into this.  It's a lot to write about, to try to provide comprehensive answers to all of your questions.

If you are looking for something you can wear at a gun range (if they allow that, many don't) or out in the country, you should probably get yourself a decent OWB kydex holster with a belt slide attachment.  This can also double as a concealed carry rig with the right shirt or jacket.  If you were planning to open carry in populated areas with that holster, then you would want to get a holster with some active retention methods, like a locking system with a button release, a hood, or both.  If you were planning to concealed carry with a wider variety of clothing, you would want to look at an IWB holster specific to your carry position, usually either hip or appendix.

To clarify, a "drop offset" refers to a part that mounts the holster to the belt. A good one to Google is the Ben Stoeger "Boss Hanger". It lowers the gun on your hip and places it away from your body for a faster draw(for competition).
Since you are new to this, I'd recommend buying a good quality kydex or molded leather holster that retains it's shape to make re-holstering easier(safer). The P-09 is a big, heavy pistol so you'll need a very sturdy belt.
