Urban Gray finish?

Hello all,

Going to order my first CZ next week, the gun shop I like to use is closed for the holidays.

I am going to be ordering a Shadow 2 for USPSA Production.  I have many weapons but this will be my first CZ.

I like the urban gray color but wondering how the finish holds up.

I understand this weapon is only a tool and will get scratched up but is it an overly soft finish?

I also understand it will show dirt and get black.  I am ok with that as long as it cleans it up well after shooting.

Good question - I've asked before but no real answer.  I THINK it is polycoat which is a good paint.  Its OK. 

Cerakote would be mush better, and PVD better yet.

The urban gray wears off faster compared to the black shadow 2. Both of them cleans up really easy. I strip and clean them with brake parts cleaner and blow it with compressed air after about 2-3k rounds. Then I oil it up and use slide glide on the rails.

I have the Shadow 2 in Urban Grey and yes you will see holster wear fairly quickly. I shoot usually 4-5 matches a month and do a lot of dry fire practice so the gun is getting a lot of use. The wear doesn't bother me, I like a gun that looks like its being used.

I thought cerakote was tougher than polycoat?

I?ve never seen a polycoat CZ wear through the finish but I?ve seen plenty of Urban Greys with bad holster wear.

Cerakote is paint as is Duracoat as is Polycoat.  No intention to imply otherwise.  They are not equal.

Cerakote is more durable than CZ Polycoat.  The words are not interchangeable.

Whatever makes you feel better. Doesn?t explain all the Urban Greys with the finish worn off from holster use... you know, the ones that actually get used for the purpose that they were intended.

I know Polycoat guns with 10 times the amount of use on them that don?t show the same wear. Now how can that be

The point is that we DON'T know what CZ uses on the UG finish.  We THINK it is Polycoat - and maybe in this form it is 'not good' in that color and appears less durable. 

Again, I really don't think the UG is Cerakote. 

What would make ME 'feel good?'  Nitriding or PVD.

Urban Grey is not cerakote. It's polycoat just like CZ's normal black polycoat is.

Polycoat = powder coat over phosphate.

Without getting into the name game....it is not the most durable coating, but it is decent.  Thick and easily flaked off compared to better choices, but not horrible.   A drop, bang, or sight mounting will cause wear immediately.
