Modifying P-09 21rnd mags to fit USPSA 141mm gauge?
« on: January 09, 2019, 03:42:49 PM »
I have a P-09 SR with 21rnd mags. I was psyched to shoot in USPSA Carry-Optics until I discovered the 21rnd  magazines(+2 baseplates) that come with it are slightly too big to fit the 141mm USPSA gauge.

I don't want to fall back to the 19rnd duty mags, so does anyone have any experience modifying the 21rnd to fit the gauge?  Maybe switching to a +1 baseplate from someone for 20rnds??
Sheesh, I would only need to grind off about 1/16" from the corner of +2 baseplate and it would fit the gauge; but not sure if this is legal or if the mag would still function reliably.

My P-07 has ShieldArms +5 extensions for 20+1. I would like to be able to switch guns without altering my stage plan thinking. Otherwise, they're set up identically with Vortex Venom RDS.

Thanks for any suggestions   -Vinny

I?m currently shooting a P10C in Carry Optics.  One of my mags is a P-09 19-rnd magazine fitted with a Springer Precision basepad and Grams follower for a total capacity of 23 rnds.  I?m using this mag extension:

Thanks 2morechains for this info.
Looks like they fit the 141mm gauge OK?
The new USPSA rules effective Feb 2019 even say it's OK to press them down slightly in the gauge as long as they sit flat.

Of course I'd like to use the 2 factory mags I have (I think Mecgar?) which say 19rnd but have the +2 basepad. I'm thinking the metal tube is identical to the 19rnd P-09 mag you're using, so it's worth a try.

I've also heard the new P-10F mags will retro-fit the P-09 as well. Like the P-10C mags vs. P-07's, they'll probably be less expensive too, but I haven't seen them out there yet. I'm using the 15rnd P-10C mags (with red follower) with the ShieldArms +5 extensions in my P-07 for 20+1 and they easily fit the 141mm gauge and work very reliably.

I'd even be OK with 20 rounds so maybe there's a +1 basepad that will fit the P-09 mags?

Any other suggestions welcomed.
Thanks.    -Vinny

Thanks for the heads up. I put the CZ +2 base pads on my mags and have been running them in Cary Optics. Good to know I will need a change if I shoot at a bigger match that measures mags!

Yeah,
With the CZ +2 basepad it's maybe 1/16" too long for the USPSA gauge. I wish I could just grind a little off the corner of basepad to make it fit.  :(    Maybe there's a +1 P-07/09/10 basepad out there that will work to convert these two I have to hold 20?

First thing I did when I got the SP basepad was to check the mag gauge for length (yeah, I have one), and it would pass inpection even without slight pressure.  Springer sized these basepads just right.

With the SP basepad on the standard P-09 mag with orange follower I get a 22+1 capacity (or 23+1 with the Grams follower).

As far as I know, the P-09 mag I?m using is the same one you show in your picture.  Bought it from Greg Cottel, and has the orange follower.

That's great info.
I was looking on Greg Cote site and they offer #11621 magazine for P-09 9mm with an aluminum +2 basepad (21rnds) that appears to have an angle cut to shorten the OAL to fit the gauge, but I haven't verified this. It's $57 complete: 21 round mag and alum base.

CZ USA has just this same aluminum +2 basepad part#10911189 but it's $37 for just the basepad.

I think the Springer extension that you're suggesting may be a better solution.
Thanks again!

You bet, good luck.

If you don?t already have one, an Uplula loader comes in handy when loading the last 3-4 rnds.

For sure my fingertips would be worn to shreds already without my Uplula!

I went with the CZ Custom 140mm base pad plus the spring and follower kit.  Gets 23 rounds reloadable mags that fit the USPSA gauge.  Only downside is that with the follower, it will not lock back the slide after the last round.

Also, you really only need one set up this way (unless you like redundancy or miss a lot).  With some stage planning for bigger stages you can start with a big stick or short and plan your one reload on the stage.

Good info.
I think I'm going to try this setup for USPSA. I like an odd number like 23 in the starting mag so I could shoot up to 22, reload quicker with one already in the pipe. However I better keep track of my round counts or I'll really mess up with no lock back and nothing in the pipe.  ::)

23+1 at Make Ready.  Because 24 is gooder than 23.

CO is like Limited div, if you find yourself going to slide lock/empty, you?ve messed up somewhere along the way.  :)

I shoot CO in both IDPA and USPSA local matches. I forget I can 'Barney Up' at Make Ready in USPSA.
