Question Regarding Chopping Carbine Handguard for SBR
« on: January 11, 2019, 02:45:44 PM »
I'm chewing on the idea of SBRing my carbine, and one reservation I have is that it would be a shame to lose the nice feel of the carbine handguard in my hand. So...is there any technical reason why I couldn't just chop the factory handguard so it ends right behind the barrel nut, making it the same length as the factory pistol handguard? Asthetically, I don't know that I like it, but right now I'm just looking at whether it's feasible. You'd have to cut far enough forward to clear the charging handle channel, but there appears to be enough room.

It may look great if you were creative with your cutting...

Yeah, I think you'd have to put some sort of angle on it, or it might look weird. However, there are plenty of aftermarket handguards with a square edge, and they look nice. I don't know...

Yes, aftermarket handguards do exist. That's not what I'm asking about.

Just pointing out they're on sale,  like half price....

I really only prefer the flat ones because of the look of the innovative arms suppressed scorpion....

If not for compactness, Why not just get a flash can and keep the handguard as is?

It is for compactness though. I'm not really interested in a can at this point.

Use a can and leave the handguard?

I don't see why it would be an issue at all as long as you didn't go behind where the barrel nut engages. The barrel nut tightens against a washer, the washer fits in a slight cut out in the handguard.
Might be easier / cleaner to use the pistol handguard. I don't think there demanding a lot of $. Well I hope not anyway, I just sold my pistol handguard for $25.

I'm considering that, but I don't want the picatinny rails, and covering them up would, I think, make it too bulky. But yeah, it's a possibility.

I don't remember who it was on this forum but they shaved the rails off the sides of the pistol handguard. I thought it looked decent from what I could see. But yeah if you're going to be cutting and filing might as well use what you have.
If you took your time with it I bet you could chop it and have it look factory.
