Good info guys, thanks. I'm not a reloader so availibility of good factory ammo is a requirement
That's a shame because 45-70 is crazy easy to reload, (Straight walled case is easily resized. ) and factory ammo can get expensive if you shoot much quantity. There are certainly sources to mail order a broader variety but in terms of retail stores charging prices you might actually carry the cash to pay....only about 3 loads show up with any regularity.
Winchester has a silverbox cowboy level 405 grain load.
Federal has a 300gr speer soft point that is quite stout for black bear or elk.
Hornady has their 325 grain FTX which I believe is also marked as a lever evolution or maybe a performance load. It's a hot one. Never shot a critter with it but it really destroys targets like steel plate, jugs of water, and cinderblocks.
Problem is the Winchester is a seasonal thing-goes out of stock quickly then you wait a year- and the hornady brass is a bastard length, so federal is about the only reliable source.
Reloading OTOH enables me to make up 1000fps powderpuff loads for fun or Hammer of Thor type loads for serious uses.  Brass life is very long.  Large rifle primers are easy to find. Varget powder is quite versatile in this cartridge and trail boss works very well for light loads.   2 powders. That's all you need.

I ended up putting a Model 1895 Trapper in jail (CA 10 day wait) along with a CZ 75SA. It looks like i can add a rail latter if need be. Now to pick up some 45-70 for brass.

.45-70 will probably work ok, but I always used fishhooks for bass   ;D

Had something very similar to it back in the early 1980's, and it was a great Rifle.  One of my more regrettable trade-offs.

Not mine, but exactly the same, minus a 1-4x Bushnell Scope

If you wind up getting one, inspect it very carefully BEFORE taking full delivery.
Current Marlin Production can be hit or miss, quality-wise.

You may find this article, entertaining and informative: https://www.huntinggearguy.com/rifle-reviews/marlin-classic-model-1895-mini-review/

007, I have this rifle also.  Maybe a box of 20 45-70 through it.   JM pre Remington that I've had for About 20 years.  Safe queen which is a shame.  Excellent wild pig gun for down here in TX.

I had one , recently sold it to a neighbor. Very good rifle, but I never used it as my big game hunting desire has waned over the past decade.  Still bird hunt with a passion, but my Win 70 in 270 can handle any big game I?m likely to go after.

Like a midget at a urinal, I'll have to keep on my toes

Did you buy your 45-70 Lever yet ?
Here's another nice choice:

Not the Guide but the GBL in 45-70. I bought it about four months ago and bought this over the Guide for extra ammo capacity. I bought it to hog hunt with but did deer hunt with it at the end of the season with no luck.

I did a few mods to it and also tried several different Red Dot/Scope combinations before settling on the scout set up. The 2X power gives me quick close shots and higher magnification if I need it.

I load 405gr Lead RN for it and I load them light woth IMR 3031. Plenty of power but easy on the shoulder and accurate enough for any distance I shoot which is about 100 yards max.

It's been on my radar as well. I had a Henry Big Boy that I totally regret trading away now, and I need another lever in my life. Torn between another Henry and the Marlin Guide...
