Depriming S&B Ruag brass - it's a pain ....
« on: May 21, 2019, 07:47:00 PM »
Ok, I started collecting brass a while ago and before ready to start reloading I'd like to deprime and clean brass.
I'm using Frankford Arsenal Hand Deprimer tool which is pretty good for the most of brass cases.

Now I have some 9mm S&B (made by Ruag) brass which is pain in the ass to deprime :(
Every time my deprimer pin got stuck, so I need to disassemble cover and use table vise with rubber lips to get brass case out. To say this is annoying is to say nothing. I did some research online and found that S&B Ruag brass (marked as SB -R   9x19) is similar to Geco Ruag brass and different from other S&B. (I actually have several random S&B cases which I deprimed without any issues).

Asking if anybody had experience with Ruag brass cases are they good for reloading or should I simply throw them away?
Can I do something with deprimer pin (polish???) so that it won't stuck? I tried different types of lubrication, bit it didn't help.

Deprime easy enough on my turret press. I have bunches of misc. S&B 9mm brass.

Some companies make their flash holes smaller than others, and Ruag must be one of them, since you're having that problem.  For brass with the smaller flash hole, I simply use a Lyman Universal Decapping Die (the old style, that uses the small decapping pin).  If you don't have one, you can try making your decapping pin smaller, but it's hardened steel, and it will be difficult.  It also won't be as strong, once it's thinned down.

Hope this helps.

I reload S&B cases, but they are a known trouble maker.

Some things to be aware of...
? Mighty tight primer pocket is really tough with thick primers, like CCI
? Some S&B are brass plated steel, and should NOT be reloaded. First thing you do with S&B is to get out the magnet.

Thank you, I checked with magnet - it is brass, not steel.

It looks like a flash hole is smaller, BTW here's an interesting thread I found which compares this brass with other S&B and Ruag products.

But, I didn't find any reloading experience with this particular case.

S&B steel...

I believe you, I bought sometime  "American Steel" from Freedom Munitions which looks exactly like brass :)
But, my cases are brass (double-checked) and I also picked them from indoor range with strict "brass-only" policy. They check all the rounds with magnet and visually to filter out steel and aluminum cases.
