Sphinx SDP compact grip removal.
« on: August 05, 2016, 09:38:29 PM »
Just bought a new Sphinx SDP compact and tried to see what the different grips felt like. I removed the retaining pin and attached the U shaped removal tool to pull the grip off. It would not budge no matter how hard I pulled. Anyone have this problem. I am afraid if I pull any harder I will damage the grip.
Thanks for any help.

Take out the hammer spring : And the grip will come off. I bought mine used and that tool you mention was missing : I couldn't get mine off but when I removed the hammer spring to add the Cajun spring kit I was able to pull my backstap off. They still come off hard. Pull slightly up and out. Jerk it hard.

Thanks, I'll give it a try! But why would taking out the hammer sprig make a difference?

I have no idea LOL It may not but when I released the tension I can get the grip off : Grab it with the hand about it the middle and just pull hard and quick. Comes off easily

I've tried everything short of C4 to get the grip off and it will not budge. I'm wondering if the fact that it was ceracoted has something to do with it. I called Kriss and they said to pry slightly on the edge and introduce some light oil to migrate under the grip. That too, was a no go as even thin plastic toothpicks would not separate it to get oil introduced. Any metal like a dental pick would scratch the ceracote. Looks like the Medium grips will be the grip of choice.

You probably don't need to take out the hammer Spring. I was referring more to popping out the retaining pin , that holds the Hammer spring and grip backstrap in place:

Look at one of the extra grips : There's a tab near the bottom : Take a butter knife of a spoon :Or better yet use a razor or knife blade: Put a piece of masking tape on the blade and just slightly wiggle it:  put a towel against the gun so you don't scratch it. If you do scratch it a little. Buy a Presto Blue Pen and the scratch will disappear: They cost around $5-$7 The Pen is  amazing stuff. Before doing the  knife idea. Put it in direct sun for an hour and soften it up.

I would say it's more possible the grip was installed while still warm : So some level of stick and suction has occurred. You did take out the retaining pin I'll assume?  I can just squeeze mine with 2 fingers and pop it right off. Try warming it up : I'd be surprised if that didn't work : You should only need the Sun for an hour maybe less.

You have the tool that mine was missing: It sure seems like using that pulling up and out simultaneously would do the trick. After heating it up :)

Thanks for the help. I've pretty much given up on trying to remove the grip. I'll give your suggestions a try and let you know.

Just tried one last time to remove and replace the grips. I tried heating the grip and it made no difference. Finally hooked the grip up to a friends D-8 bulldozer and only managed to break the chain. I do believe I'll be sticking with the medium grips!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know this thread is old but I had the same problem. There was no way in hell you could pul that grip off. But I did find a solution after a year of just accepting the medium grip.

Anyway remove the pin. Remove the hammer spring and plug. Slide a small screwdriver down the hammer spring hole and carefully pry the grip off from the inside.

I couldn?t believe how easy it was after trying so hard to pull the bleep thing off before.
