New re-loading press
« on: March 17, 2019, 09:04:59 PM »
I currently have a Lee pro 1000 press for loading 9mm, it has served its purpose and will continue to do so. I feel it was a fair intro piece to the world of re-loading. I'm currently looking to start loading rifle rounds. I've been looking around for a single stage press. There is so many options and price ranges. I'm wondering if the Lee breach lock kit is worth buying? The other kit I'm interested in is the rcbs kit.
Thanks for any input.

If you want strength which you really should the RCBS single stage is hard to beat. Lyman makes a tough press in the Orange Crusher as well.

Forster Co-Ax for my precision rifle rounds.  I load .223 Rem., 6mm BR, 6.5x47 Lapua, and .308 Win on mine.  My .223 Rem ?blaster? ammo is loaded on my Dillon 550.

If your loading for precision, I'd look at the Frankford Arsenal M Press.  It's similar to the CoAx but different and on paper it has some nice features.  It's brand new to the market so I don't think that there are any durability reviews yet?  I don't know what the street price is of the M Press will end up being but at $250 it looks like a winner.  Here is an unboxing and initial use review:

http://ultimatereloader.com/2019/01/12/new-frankford-arsenal-m-press-unboxing-and-complete-overview/

I use a CoAx and have great results with quality dies (Redding and Forster).  I must admit the M-press design and features (integrated LED, Primer catch pan, Cam over option, shell plate quick change, lower profile) would probably sway me to purchase the M-press over the CoAx if I were in the market.

Cheers,
Toby

I second what tdogg said and was about to suggest the same. The new FA press looks pretty cool and that's where my money would go if I were on the market for a single stage/turret press. I never got the idea of a turret press until last year, the ability to spin the head and make a complete round is pretty cool. plus like progressives, you keep your dies seated and locked in when doing the different stages of reloading.

One question I've pondered about the turrets - Does the FA or Forster T7 or other turret presses allow you to Buy/change out different turret heads, kind of like the toolheads on a progressive? That way you could have a turret for each caliber and keep all your settings on the dies.

I do all my single stage loading and brass prep on an old RCBS jr. and can attest to the durability. Id probably go rockchucker if I absolutely wanted a single stage.

You can buy extra Turrets for the Redding T-7 Press.  Here they are on Midway's site:   https://www.midwayusa.com/product/249156/redding-t-7-turret-press-turret-with-bushings.  With 7 holes, you could have two 3 die sets in place and room for a powder measure too.

I wonder if you could buy different turrets for the new FA? Also I've heard good things about the hornady lock in bushings as for keeping settings, but still think a turret head would be better way to go.

Thanks for all the info! I'm going to look into these presses and decide what seems most suitable for my needs.

There are the late model single stage presses I mention, then there is the Dillon 550. It's a single stage when you want, or a progressive when you need. That's a press that could do both jobs quite well.

Justed watched this video and pertained to this question perfectly.  Great info and comparison for so many presses.  https://youtu.be/TqcYI0G2hqM

I've always thought Gavin did a great job and have recommended his videos to novice reloaders for years. In this video while trying to come up with ways to adequately compare so many presses he really goes over the top. By that I mean he goes into "full nerd mode", which as a fellow engineer simply makes me laugh, but I fear it might put some people off.

Still, a great video.   ;D
