Load Testing: VihtaVuori N330 powder
« on: March 22, 2019, 06:30:50 PM »
Decided I would start loading more with Vit N330 since so many people had asked about it over the last year. I had good intentions, but I'm not sure how well my testing turn out. You decide.

Background
Caliber:  9x19 Luger
Bullets:  Zero 124gr JHP
Brass:    RWS
Powder:  Vit N330
Max Velocity:  1178fps @ 4.9gr per the Vit load manual
Primer:   Winchester WSP
OAL:      1.105"
Pistol:    SP-01 Tac
Qty:      10 rounds each, slow fired
Weather:  70F, clear and windy. A perfect March day.
Chrono:  ProChrono

Load      Avg Vel           SD
4.6gr        1019              11
4.7           1037              13
4.8           1055              17
4.9           1075              10
5.0           1095              12

NOTES:
> The loading went well, but the wind made range work frustrating
> Wind kept blowing over my backstop. Finally decided to loose some brass.
> Numbers at 4.6gr matched my previous testing
> Velocity failed to climb to book numbers which was disappointing
> The Zero bullet is 0.567" long
> OAL of 1.105" results in a ~0.200" seating depth
> I'd expect similar results with the PD 124gr JHP

 ;)

Test setup...

Cases running cleanly, even at 4.6gr...

Good Results!  8)  I have some PD 124 grain JHP's on hand that will probably get around the 5 grain level.

Very good results!  8)  Again, my PD 124 gr JHP's will probably get the 5 grain level, as that's about where I want to go, power wise.

Also, thanks for posting the .38 Special Load Development results.  I might just try that, although my pet Load using the same Berry's Bullet, using WST yields similar results with only 3.8 grains.

On Mr. Wobblie's advice, I've been trying some N330, too.
Strangely enough, VV has data for the Berry's HBRN-TP for about every powder but N330.  ;D
My sweetie bought me a new chrono for my 3/4 of a century birthday.  :) She's a good girl.
I started low. 3.6 went bang, and the gun worked fine. Average speed was 798.
Went up to 4.4, which averaged 963.
Today, I did a ladder from 4.2 to 5.0gr.

Caliber:  9MM
Bullets:  124gr Berry's HBRN-TP
Brass:    F.C.
Powder:  Vit N330
Max Velocity:  ~1130fps
Primer:   S&B
OAL:      1.145"
Pistol:    CZ 75B
Qty:       5 rounds each, slow fired
Weather:  75F and hazy sun
Chrono:  ProChrono

Load        Av. Vel      SD
4.2           921          9
4.4           962          20
4.6          1020          8
4.8          1066          13
5.0          1092          18

Notes
> Looks like 4.6 will be my can killin load. :)

Whats the difference between N320 and N330? Is it just burn rate or something else?
