CZ 91197 Stainless steel finish debate

I was wondering if anyone has tested or knows for sure whether the 91197 is actually stainless or rather carbon steel that was hard chrome and polished? I have heard mixed things. I saw one video using muriatic acid on a 99021 and a 91197. The 99021 rusted and the 91197 had grey staining. I've also heard that they are carbon steel that has been hard chromed from a very reputable gun smith who I will not put on the spot for obvious reasons. Some of have reported chipping/flaking as well according to him. Please somebody resolve this for me!!! I just bought one and It's gorgeous but it's eating away at me not knowing for sure.

Some stainless can be "attracted" by a magnet.  Some won't be.  Some will, but the pull is much weaker than carbon steel.

Not sure about the stainless steel used (or not used) in CZ pistols.  Anyone else know?

Put it in a bowl of hydrochloric acid like your friend did and get back with us.

or maybe a rockwell hardness test?  Scratch it.

In lieu of a polished stainless model, I'd be delighted with hard chrome job!

I don't really care too much about whether it's chrome or stainless. I care more about knowing which of the two the 91197 actually is because having things done like laser checkering becomes an issue. If you were to do something like laser checkering you could end up having to re-chrome the whole gun because you thought it was stainless. Nobody I know actually performed the test. I saw a video of somebody doing it online. Supposedly when muriatic acid is applied to carbon steel it rusts and when applied to stainless it leaves a light grey stain that can be removed. The person did it with a q-tip on the inside part of their frame. I'm not very confident in that test personally and I wouldn't risk damaging my 91197 to try it.

Why not just call CZ usa and ask them.

I sent them an email. They marketed it as a stainless steel firearm that is high polished so thats what it should be.

I've no doubt it's stainless.. CZ's reputation would be seriously harmed if they chrome plated guns, and peddled them off as polished stainless.. Besides would'nt doing something like that fall under false advertising?

These were a contract overrun, not a cataloged SKU.  If I remember right, the box says ?stainless? not ?high polish? stainless like the 75b variant.  Technically they could be stainless steel that has been plated, wether that was what the customer ordered or CZ thought they could fill the order faster do plate as opposed to hand polish each gun, who knows.  I question it myself because all of the 91197?s have a yellowish tint to them that the 75 polished does not.  Only way to really know is when somebody decides to have the gun media blasted.

My concern is having some laser engraving on the front or backstrap and finding out they're not stainless or high polished and having to spend an extra $350 to have it re-plated.

I saw one on FB that looked to be peeling. I've known the owner to be a reputable guy(on FB) FWIW. He contacted CZ-USA but I never saw a resolution discussed online. The crappy electropencil rollmarks were enough to turn me off anyway.

The polished stainless P01 with a safety.

Not sure why you would question what it was when it's advertised as stainless. Making it for a couple years and never being sued for false advertising or fraud would pretty much make me a believer.  This would also make flaking or peeling impossible. Even beat to death nickel plated CZs don't peel or flake.

They Havnt been made for a couple years, It was a one time import due to a contract over run and there is less than 200 of them.  Also, they were never stated as being ?high polished? only stainless which is different from the high polished stainless 75b.  There are some videos of people showing the flaking on these so concerns are legit.

     Hiya and thx for the thread. Sounds like you got your answer from cz. Thats a pretty high price to bo backstraps ,can ya show what you are having engraved on them,as long as its fit for work graphics. Be well.
