Help me change my grips (CZ 75B Omega)
« on: May 19, 2019, 03:10:36 AM »
Hi,

I got a CZ75B Omega made in 2016. It was pre-convertible, so safety only. Anyway, I bought a set of G-10 grips on amazon, with good reviews. Anybody got these?
https://www.amazon.ca/Exel-H6-2-5-Grips-Full-Black/dp/B016BD29JY/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=cz+grips+75&qid=1557540275&s=gateway&sr=8-8

Help me replace my grips without damaging anything or do something stupid. I got the regular "factory"plastic grips on it right now. Only one screw per side, what can go wrong!
Do I have to expect the screws to be tight (loctited-in)? Do I put blue loctite on the screws once I'm ready to tighten them? I remember reading something about inserting a small "o"ring between the screw and the G-10...

Any advices will be definitely appreciated! I bought those grips because they are sold as being a little slimmer/thinner than the factory ones. I hope that it will make the pistol fitting my shooting hand better. It would look good too, but it wasn't the motivation here...

Cheers!

I've never put Loctite on grip screw threads.  I have on the 1911 grip screw bushings, but the CZ75's don't use that type of set up.

No o-rings either.

I will say that sometimes, the grip screw holes in the grips just don't perfectly align with the threaded holes in the frame.  Usually just one side becomes aggravating.  And it's happened to me with the soft rubber grips more often than with the hard plastic grips.

Back to the "technique".  Just remove the old screws and the grip panels.  With the pistol unloaded, of course.  If, after a screw is removed the grip is stubborn about coming off just stick a finger in the mag. well, put the finger tip on the inside of the grip and push it off the frame.  It should pop off easily with no screw holding it.

I always wipe the frame down with an oil cloth before I put the grips back on.  If the polycoat is in new condition it might not be as much of an issue, but on many guns the area under the grip panels is never seen, never inspected/cleaned and never protected with a film of oil/lubricant, so do it when you have a chance to look at it and lube it, do it.

When you put the grips on it the front should go on/in first, then lay the back edge down and make sure the panel edges go flush with the frame.  I'd do one side at a time.  Then try to insert and thread in the screw.  Don't use a lot of force when starting the screws.  Just align and turn the screw and make sure it starts squarely into the frame threads.  It won't take "force" to thread it in if it's correctly aligned.

It won't take much force to get the screws tight either.  You don't what to strip them out.  Admittedly, it's a "feel" thing if you don't have one of those little torque limiting screw drivers being sold the last few years.

If you want a "feel" for starting and threading the grips screws then do it a time or two with no grip panel on the frame.  It gives you a good idea of the angle the screw needs to be at, how easy it should be to start the screw and how easy it is to turn the screw down into the frame when it's properly aligned.  That might help, when you have the grip panel on the frame, to get the screws right.

Good luck with it.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

If you'll be re using the stock screws be certain you have a screwdriver with a blade that fits "Goldilocks". The screws are easily marred otherwise. The RAMI bushings I'm familiar with have two flat sides and no slot for a screwdriver. They require precise alignment to allow the grips to be positioned properly. Positioning them would be vastly easier if there were a slot? I used a micro needle nose pliers, I'll guess the span on the flats is 2.5mm? On mine (the Rami has 4 screws) 2 were tighter than the others and required the pliers to adjust. I'd suggest getting one adjusted so it works with your grips and using it for a reference for the other side. Get the height correct before putting both grips on and realizing the screw on one side is too deep or high. Make them match. If you were going to Locktite anything (some do/some don't) be sure to use BLUE and clean the hole and screw threads with alcohol first...
Personally, I'd suggest upgrading the stock screws. I got some torx head babies and O rings (no need for any nasty Locktite here) from CZ USA. They come with the wrench, look cool and are way less likely to damage when installing. At $2.00/ea I had them toss a set of new bushings in too, just to have.

    good luck :-)

lol, ok I learned something today. My daugther was more aabout Dora the explored than Goldielocks...lol

I did the swap, and the grips did fit just right. I haven't fired the pistol yet, but if the grips loosen, then I will try to source the smalled orings I can find to add-on.

A little late to the thread, but great suggestions above have already been provided.

With rubber grips, I will add that don't screw in too tight, or the magazine will not drop.

Also, sometimes the holes don't align properly.  I would thread the screw through the grip first, and then align the screw to the frame.

Finally, I have a bag of screws (100) and washers on hand.  Screws are the same as the OEM, M3.5-0.6 x 8mm.  They will fit most 75s, except RAMI.

Nah,never too late. I was surprised to see that the "screw head" area of the hole in the grips had a flat portion to it, I first thought it would be a conical champfer. I will try to find those #6 lock-washers indeed. Thanks!

For the GOT fans, you can find the #6 washers at Hardhome Depot  ;)

That's where the Night King bought heavy duty iron chain-link ropes to fish out Viserion.

Well, doesn't hurt for me to buy both and keep them stashed with my other loose parts...
