P-07 for the wife?
« on: May 31, 2019, 03:39:06 PM »
I've finally convinced the wife to dump her Taurus and get a new gun.  I'm a new CZ owner myself (Shadow 2) and not really familiar with the entire CZ product line, but I'm thinking the P-07 would be a good option for her.  She is not comfortable with pistols that don't have a conventional safety (Glock) but she is ok with a DA/SA trigger.  With the Omega system the P-07 would give her the option of a safety or DA/SA trigger.  The closest gun store to us that carries CZs is about 1 1/2 hours away so it's not like we can easily shop the P-07.  Am I correct in my thinking that this CZ would be a good weapon for a woman?  I guess I could just buy one and if she doesn't like it, it could become mine ;).

P07 is a great carry gun. The grip is exceptional in my opinion. I like the DA pull. Easy to get used to.  The SA is nice also.
I would recommend it man or woman. I guess finger strength could be a concern. But I think that depends on the individual.

My wife carries a P365 and she isn?t giving that up, but she did say she would consider my P-07 if she didn?t have her beloved 365.  She likes the trigger and size of the gun, and obviously how ridiculously accurate it is for a compact.

Yes, we plan to look at the P365 and I think the P320 Carry is offered with an optional manual safety, if one can be found.  The M&P9 2.0 Compact is also a contender.

I got one for my wife for Christmas to use as a carry gun. She didn't like it. Her clothes do not really allow on person carry so she purse carried for a while. Double stack mid size was a little heavy for her.

I took her to a range that had plenty of rentals and she fell in love with the single action of the 1911 and really wanted a Springfield EMP. Little more than I wanted to spend. She offered up that I should sell the P07 to help fund her EMP. Isaid we don't sell guns in this house cause you always reget it afterwords. If you can get her to a range to try some out, you might find somwthing she is comfortable with. A gun she doesn't enjoy shooting will be left at home and not practiced with.

Could look at a Bersa. DA/SA, single stack or double stack, decent aftermarket support, not over priced.

Hi Rdneck. P07 is a decent pick.
When my Wife wanted her own pistol, I encouraged her to rent a few different ones at several ranges. She liked the HK P30, and one of her friends has an SP2022 she liked too. She finally picked out a P07 in ODG. I've got to admit it's nice having 2 in the house though.

I wish there was a range close by that rented guns.  We live in the sticks and shoot mostly in the back yard. I don't have any friends who are into handguns like I am. The closest range is about 30 miles away and the rentals they have are crap.  In the last two years I've bought a Glock G19, two Sigs (P220 and P226), a Dan Wesson 1911, and the CZ Shadow 2.  I had never fired any of these guns until I received the ones I purchased.  I never even seen or touched a DW or a S2 until I received the ones I purchased. I currently have a semi custom 1911 on order and have never seen a real life example of the builders work. What I do is tons of research on the internet.  I read a lot of reviews, watch Youtubes, and ask questions on forums like this.  So far, I've not made a mistake a bought a dog (knock on wood).

Try a LGS that rents pistols is my advice.  We had 120 handguns for $20 to try. Mostly polymer and less than $600 guns. Open the safe, let her shoot every darn thing she will.  Call your pals with guns as you start narowing down her wishes and limits. Have her try them out. You'll know what she's comfortable with.  I tried my hardest make my Lady a .45 fan.  Nope. All .380 and 9mm.  If I had to buy a polymer gun in 9mm a P-07 would be it though.

Thats rough not having much in the way of options to test first. Any ranges around you that put on local matches. IDPA and USPSA have pretty friendly people that might be able to offer up a day at the range to try some new guns. They let my wife compete with a .22 her first time in IDPA. it wouldn't knock over steel poppers but she had fun and they were more than helpful. She is recoil shy and that adds to her apprehension. She likes the .22 for its lack of recoil. The 9mm in an all steel frame can be just like a .22. I think that is why she gravitated to the EMP.

The P365 is now avail with a safety, I got an e-mail from Sig this week saying they were now shipping.
Or how about a CZ Rami?

Picking a pistol for carry is a pretty subjective thing and may not be easy to do for yourself, let alone someone else.  I?ve been into handguns for over 30 years.  Only in the last 3 years have I really honed in on what I really like and want in a carry pistol.  I have found the P07 and the Beretta Px4 compact to be very closely matched, when set up right, in meeting, my desires in a compact carry pistol.

My desires and preferences may be nowhere near what your wife would like.

What I like about each:
- size comparable to a Glock 19 (mid size, not too small to control, not too big to conceal).  In the Beretta to get overall width down, required factory optional low profile slide release and decocker levers.
- DA/SA trigger system with decocker that has a manageable trigger.  Beretta is smoother, CZ has more positive reset.
- a grip that fit my hand and allowed some adjustability to get me good trigger reach.  Both are about equal.  CZ has better factory grip texture, but I?m not above stippling or adding some adhesive traction products.  I like grippy.
- good capacity- both are standard with 15 rnd mags in 9mm.
- good control under recoil.  Both are highly manageable and once again about equal when I run drills on my timer, and see negligible difference in my shot to shot split times.  Px4 accomplishes some of this with their rotating and non tilting barrel design.  CZ seems to get it with slide mass and bore axis.
-good sights available.  I really like the Ameriglo night sights with the orange surrounded tritium front and blacked out rear that Beretta offers for the Px4.  Really wish Ameriglo would do an identical set for the CZs.
-above all other factors reliability, reliability, reliability.  I?ve been running a log book on both pistols.  Each ran through 1,000 rounds without cleaning, using multiple brands, types and weights of loads.  They have since, run through well over 1,000 rounds trouble free with routine cleanings.  (Open honesty here, I was worried on my first outing with my Px4 because it choked on multiple rounds of IMI 124 gr FMJ, as well as Magtech.  I ended up,finding a thicker rim on those cartridges. This led me to look at my extractor to find a burr on the extractor hook.  I took a polishing stone and removed the burr, and haven?t had a problem since.)

Other findings are that the finish on the CZ holds up better to holster wear and carry than the finish on the Beretta.  The Beretta has a smoother trigger out of the box.  The CZ factory trigger, though it seems rougher, didn?t seem to hinder me from getting good hits on targets during drills.  Both triggers can be upgraded.  Beretta offers some good parts through their own online store, so warranties can still be honored.  CZ has a couple of good after market companies that offer good upgrades.

Shooting both pistols side by side for well over a year now and I still like both of them a lot.  I think the CZ is probably a bit more suited to carry out of the box, based on grip texture, and a more durable finish that will put up with exposure during carry.  Also the slide in frame design tends to make me feel more comfortable about garbage not getting into the pistol while carrying.  The Beretta is a bit more comfortable after putting the low profile controls on it, and the curved rear of the slide is more comfortable.

But out of these two pistols, after 30 years of handgunning I?m hard pressed to rule either one out of carry.

Your wife may not give a single care for any one of the criteria I used in landing on these pistols (other than the reliability factor).  Each person has to decide what they want in a pistol, and then find what fits those criteria.  I wish it could be easier.

I guess it is, when some folks hit it just right the first time.

Hi Rdneck.   My Wife being fairly logical, figured familiarity and redundancy should count for something; but the Green probably clinched the decision, since it would recognizably be HERS !  She was comfortable knowing I'd be there to advise or guide her when asked. She shot the HK really well, and I even voiced my support for it, but let her make the final choice.
Who am I to argue, when she usually outshoots me anyway ! LOL
