CZ P-09 vs. SIG P320 40S&W Shootout
« on: June 02, 2019, 08:18:51 PM »
I've had the CZ P-09 for several years, and I've always found it to be a good shooter with a very good trigger, as-is.  SA trigger pull is 3? lbs. and is smooth and repeatable, but it has a significant amount of pre-travel.  However, I'd gotten quite used to it and have been well-pleased.  A few months ago, I picked up another 40S&W, this time a CPO SIG P320. I was quite impressed with the condition of this used handgun, and it came with all the ?voluntary? upgrades and 2 used magazines.  It's been flawless in four outings at the range, and it too, is a good shooter in my hands.  Yesterday, I finally had the opportunity to run these two firearms head-to-head with several flavors of my reloads.  Admittedly, my intent was not a head-to-head showdown between the CZ and the SIG, but rather to determine optimal powder loading for my reloads.  I was evaluating  three different projectiles with two different powders.  I was surprised  by  the experience.  Accuracy-wise they both shot similarly well in my hands at 15 yds, off-hand, but I did experience unexpected consistency issues with the CZ.  The real surprise was how much better the SIG trigger felt vs. the CZ.  I could not believe it.  The SIG trigger is clearly heavier, with a trigger pull of 7 lbs. even, nearly twice that of the CZ, though I had not measured either trigger pull until today.  But the pre-travel is significantly less than the CZ.  In fact, as I took turns shooting them, I  found myself anticipating the CZ trigger break, which caused me to flinch on a few shots.  Thus the poorer consistency with the CZ.  It was frustrating; I really like both pistols, but I won't be shooting these side-by-side again.  Any range time is good time, and what I learned yesterday was particularly enriching.  Full disclosure; I will share this on a few other forums.

I don't think it's trigger pull "weight" so much as consistency and "crispness."  Crispness = how far does the trigger move between "the wall" and hammer/striker release?

I bought a new M&P 2.0 5" FDE in 9MM.  Factory trigger was about 5.5 lbs., but crisp enough.  Not 100% consistent, but close.  I ran it through a couple 10 shot strings of dry fire with the Mantis on the rail and got numbers in the vicinity of 95 and 96.  Decent number, for a heavy trigger striker fired pistol (or so I thought).  I ordered the APEX 100-154 kit and installed it and it is just awesome (trigger movement rearward from reset to striker release isn't felt at all) and trigger pull weight is down to about 3.5 lbs.  Guess what?  The Mantis numbers are basically identical.  Such a vast improvement in pull weight and trigger feel/reset, etc. and no vast increase in the Mantis numbers.

And, lets see some group pictures.  Not the P09 and the SIG.  The holes in the paper with info on the ammo used (don't need grains of powder, but bullet info and primer info would be nice.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Oh believe you me, my experience yesterday made me a believer in this!
As for pictures, I can't find out how to post here.  Note: I don't and won't use a hosting site for my stuff.  I prefer to share on only sites with like-minded individuals.

The P320 is my favorite and prefered striker handgun for sure. I own several and really like them. However, just last week I scored my best run eyt on Dot Torture with my P07. I think working with the DA/SA trigger improves your skills with striker triggers overall.

If you don't self-host, then you can't post photos here.

Really, "without photos it didn't happen" as they say. So what you have here is really "impressions".

Understood,  Wobbly, and I accept that.  But I had a "blast" just the same.

I got rid of my P09 long ago. For me it?s  just to easy to shoot the striker fired guns faster and more accurately because I don?t have to deal with the DA/SA transition. I?ve got a P320 carry in 40. It?s one of the smoother shooting 40 cals.  David

I would never get rid of my PO 9 it's a tack driver.
Did you guys who got rid of your PO 9s ever do any polishing or changing of Springs? If not that's probably why you got rid of them.
