527's still amaze me
« on: July 09, 2019, 01:38:18 PM »
I've had a number of 527's over the years. They have all shot wonderfully. I have three 22 hornets. The first one I ever owned is a ruger 77 22 hornet. I had to do quite a bit to it to make it shoot under 1/2 moa. My newest hornet is a 527 american. I have done nothing to it, bone stock out of the box. I put an old leupold 6x18 on it. Did a load work up with 30 gr barnes varmint grenades and found a load that puts them in at 1/4 inch at 100 yds. Easy peasy. No  fixing anything the factory shoud have done in the first place. When mean ol mr squirrel or mean ol mr coon pops his head up between a small fork in a tree, I can introduce them to nice Mr Barnes.

I agree the 527's are mighty fine rifles, I have 2 carbines a 223 and a 7.62x39. Both wear scopes and both shoot very nice, not many rifles made today can compare. Both mine are keepers for sure and both get shot several times a month.

My 527's are 204, 22 hornet, 223, 6.5 grendle, 7.62x39. All are unmodified. All shoot better than any other factory unmodified  rifle that I have tried. BTW, I love the set triggers.

I only have one - in .223
I wish I'd bought it 30 years ago. The rifle is capable of way better than the owner.

Not the least bit "stupid," as far as I'm concerned.  It's one of the few occasions that I use the word myself.

I've set myself up for what I intend to be my final version of my own personal battery, which is based on some severe pragmatism relating to what I can, will and can afford to use.  The single conundrum which continues to vex me after several decades of sorting this "perfect for me" battery is that the 527 exists.

For where I live (NW Ohio), there's pretty much nothing I can't do with one straight-wall pistol cartridge and one bottle-necked small-bore, period.  If it were not for varmints, I could do without the small bore.  The TC Contender Carine serves my purposes exceptionally well for what I realistically need and can get by with, but I do SO love the '98 Mauser design and most all the variants.  Given that the CZ 527 is literally a miniaturized version thereof, and one of the best of the "improved" variants extant, I can't not have a couple and I'd surely have six if I weren't concerned about being in the position of having more mouths to feed than I have time or money for.

The 527 is an exquisite rendition of the 98 and such a joy in the smaller cartridges.  To my chagrin, the number of chamberings is opening up and making it hard to resist buying more of them.  I have been a big fan of the 6.5 for a long time, and a 257x39 or 358 Gremlin would be a dandy!  I have to stop thinking about this.

Speaking of "cute," after I got my Youth Carbine in 7.62x39, I figured out it was the only stock I'd ever had that actually really FIT me and decided to find one for my 222 American.  Found one for $75 and am waiting for it now.  I may lop 2" off the 222's barrel and have TWO "cute" rifles.
I've had an awful lot of birthdays for no smarter than I feel.
