SP01 Shadow Orange
« on: July 13, 2019, 08:22:39 PM »
Hey all- LGS has a new SP01 Shadow Orange. Felt great in the hand but I had a few reservations. I cannot figure out what the going rate is for these and their price of 2099.99 seemed excessively high. I really liked the fit/feel of this but that really felt like they were adding a steep premium because it is “rare”.

Couldn’t find anything on CZ USA or GB that matched it. It has ORANGE on the grips like the TSO but the barrel protrudes further past the muzzle than others I could find.

Is this a CZ Custom gun?

Is this insane or is this unobtanium that i should snatch up?

Thanks

Panda

Thanks Madduner- I did that. I also checked google and gunbroker

The glaring difference between this one and others is that it has orange written on the grips. This is something that CZ does on some factory guns so it *seems* this would be the ideal place to bounce this question

There is very little info on this and I cannot find anything about pricing. Thanks to anyone with insight

Sounds like a Shadow 2 Orange, but they have the standard barrel length with the accu bushing.  MSRP is $1999 on the S2 Orange, but many are selling at a premium.

If possible, check the sku on the box. That'll be the deciding factor and which model it really is.

As mentioned, the specific sku will really be needed for comparison purposes.

I usually use Oak Hill for price comparison for cz guns.  Even though many are currently sold out, this page will give you an idea and then when you have sku you can see for sure.

https://oakhillguns.com/pistol/cz-usa.html?ajaxcatalog=true&dir=desc&order=price

I've watched the Oak Hill site for a year, and they seem to get the high end cz pistols in stock fairly often.

Not too long ago, CZ Custom had them on the website for $1500 and change. Then, they disappeared completely from the site. Now, you can find one on GB anywhere from $1700 and up. I want one, but I didn't act fast enough.
The SP-01 Shadow Orange is different than the Shadow 2 Orange.

I believe the SP-01 Shadow Orange originally came to the US in small numbers as the SP-01 Shadow Orange (Australian version) , SKU 01168.  It was a factory built competition version of CZ's SP-01 that was and still is popular in Europe.  The main differences included a slightly longer extended barrel which protrudes a bit from the front of the slide, because European standards required a minimum barrel length of 120 MM, a hand fitted barrel to slide resulting in a tighter fit and supposedly better accuracy, a polished barrel, an assortment of springs and buffers allowing you to custom tune your SP-01, 3 10 round magazines, red fiber optic front sight,  and of course the orange grips. It came packaged in the larger plastic case just like the one the Czechmate came in. The first few imported had the outline of Australia engraved in the orange grips, but that was later deleted. There was also a Canadian version with red grips and maple leaves engraved in them. I haven't seen the SP-01 Shadow Orange with a orange grip with the word "orange" engraved in it, but I do know that the latest models of the TSO Orange and the Shadow 2 Orange also have "orange" engraved in the grip, so maybe this indicates that the model is still in production.

The version of the Shadow Orange that is seen now has changed slightly in appearance, but I believe it shares the same features. The newest model still has the orange grips, but also has orange aluminum base plates on the magazines and features 18 round magazines and is SKU 91165. I'm not sure, but I think this is the American version of the original SP-01 Shadow Orange Australian model. I'm not sure if this model is till in production or not. It may be that it is between batches as they seem to come to the US in batches. You might contact Oak Hill as they used to carry it, but it is now shown as out of stock.  https://oakhillguns.com/cz-75-sp-01-shadow-orange-9mm-2394.html

I was lucky enough to get one of the Australian versions a couple of years ago before they disappeared. It is a joy to shoot.

Oak Hill is out of stock.

I realize that Oak Hill is out of stock, I mentioned that in my post. I only suggested contacting them because they are such a big CZ dealer and might have an idea of when or if they will get some back in stock. You also might contact Stuart at CZ Custom (he's a moderator on the CZ Custom section of this website) as they used to carry them there. They are CZ built and not a custom tuned pistol, but CZ Custom might have insight on when they will get them in stock.  I still haven't seen one with "orange" engraved on the aluminum grips, but since CZ now has "orange" engraved on the latest versions of the TSO Orange and the Shadow 2 Orange, maybe that is the latest version.

There are several on Gunbroker, some at inflated prices and some at more reasonable prices. The best price I have seen on one of these is about $1686 from a reputable dealer, or there is one on Gunbroker at a slightly better price of $1659.99. Prices have definitely gone up since I got mine.

Image I snagged yesterday- looks like the same model that is going for 1600ish. I’m all for paying a fair price but at 2k that is a steep amount over cost. Sorry about the image size. Hopefully this helps clarify.

combatpanda,

I think I just found what you are looking for, seems have the same UPC code at least.  It is at Arnzen Arms LLC and their price is $1,625.  They also ship free for items over $300.

https://secure.arnzenarms.com/product/cz-dan-wesson/production/idpa/uspsa/competition/cz75-sp-01-shadow-orange-9mm-46-barrel-enhanced-slide-to-frame-fit-da-sa-polished-extra-recoil

I just bought a used CZ 75 SP01 Shadow Target II from them and they are great to deal with.

Yes, that looks like an updated version of SKU # 91764? I purchased one last September and have posted several times about it:

https://czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=100120.msg772760#msg772760

The only difference I see is that one in the pic has an extended magazine release, slightly different thumb safety and different aluminum grips than mine has.  Otherwise, I think they're very similar internally?  If you can get that one for $1600-ish, my advice would be to go for it.  You won't regret it.  I've been shooting for 40+ years and it is simply the finest handgun I've ever owned, bar none.

Here's 20 rounds of WWB 124gr NATO FMJ at 10 yards, standing, offhand.

Wow, prices have really gone up since I got mine about a year and a half ago. I paid $1249 for the CZ Shadow Orange Australian version, which personally I prefer simply because of it's uniqueness. The main difference is that mine came with the European mandated mags which were limited to 10 rounds, while the newest version sold in the US come with 18 round mags with orange bases.  Other than that it seems the same.

It is a beautiful gun, both to look at and to shoot, and I certainly enjoy mine, but at the new price of $1600 and over, I might consider other models such as the TSO Orange, which can be found for sale in the $1600-1700 range.  As nice as the SP-01 Orange is, the TSO Orange is nicer, unless someone just prefers the SP-01 grip feel over the TSO.

But either way you can't go wrong. Good luck with your decision.

I do!  I've handled both the TSO and the Shadow SP-01 Orange.  I love the SAO trigger on the TSO but, the Shadow Orange is definitely the better balanced of the two IMHO.  Plus, it has that nice, familiar CZ 75 'feel' that I know so well.  All the 'buttons' are right there within easy reach: safety, slide release and mag release.  Ultimately, I decided that the Shadow SP-01 Orange (with all the CZ Custom upgrades) was worth the extra $150 and it has proven to be a great choice.  One of the best choices I've ever made.  I paid $1799 last September.  MY FFL also had a TSO tagged at $1650 at the time.  I couldn't tell you which was 'nicer' but, the (CZ Custom) Shadow Orange has one of the smoothest actions and sweetest DA trigger-pulls of any gun I've yet to own and it just fit better than the TSO.  Like you said, though, you can't go wrong either way.
