Getting the P09 front sight OFF - hydraulic press?
« on: July 27, 2019, 07:12:59 PM »
Got a P09 front sight that after thread breaker and pounding with a plastic hammer and plastic tipped punch won't come off.  It is tritium.  Any techniques out there?

I think i might try a brass punch and a metal hammer. Since it is the front sight i might also try hooking the front sight on a peace of wood and hit the front of the slide with a non marring hammer.
Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

This is how I do it.

The original front sight on my P-07 was being replaced with nighties and I didn't care about saving the original,I went scorched earth and drove it out with a chisel and tossed it in the trash. The originals have loctite all around them and can be exceedingly tight.
If you want to save the sight try heating a small unloved phillips screwdriver red hot and then set it down in the screw hole of the front sight. This should help release any loctite that may be still holding the sight in place.
You can also heat the underside of the slide to release the sight but care must be taken so as to not harm the finish. A heat gun is handy for this. I recall schmeky from CGW discussing this method a few years back.

Guess I was lucky, it wasn’t too difficult.  I was able to tap it out with a plastic mallet on the muzzle of the slide and the sight on an edge of a table.
Like a midget at a urinal, I'll have to keep on my toes

I usually use a c clamp with a couple of pieces of leather to prevent marring of the finish.

My front sight was also hard to get off.  Rear sight was easy with my MGW Sight Pro.  Ended up buying some padded vice jaws from Home Depot and banging the crap out of it with a hammer and brass punch.  The new Night Fision front sight went in smoothly.

That's a great idea.  Have 2 more to replace and going to try this.

Going through the same thing right now with my P-07. Removed the set screw and have been banging the hell out of the front sight with a rubber mallet and a punch. The stock front sight is basically destroyed at this point and hasn't moved at all. It's insane how much Loc-Tite they put on these.

Did you try a little heat?  Heat gun is usually sufficient.

I had the opposite problem.  When CGW milled my P-10C slide for a red dot, they installed a tall front sight, I am sure with a tiny amount of loctite.  The tall sight cleared my Kydex holster...kinda.  I love shooting the P-10C so I usually strap it on when I go to the range and shoot 10-20 rounds from a draw, just for practice.

Three weeks ago, I noticed my front sight was gone.  I had finally beat it out by hanging it on the Kydex every time I pulled it from the holster over the last year.  I got a new sight from CGW and will install it with lots of loctite AND modify the holster for the tall sight so I don't snag it again.

A better option for me will be to put a Holosun 507C sight with auto on-off on the P-10C like I have on the P-10F.  That works great, and less need for a co-witness front sight.  Not sure about battery life yet, however.  The Burris sights eat batteries if you leave them on and there is no option for auto on-off.  That works fine for a match gun, but not for a home defense pistol.

Ran out of time last night, but that's the next step.

Looking forward to getting that NF sight on!

Success!

But man, this one was a lot more stubborn than the last one I removed. Of course, once it was off, installing the NF was a breeze and a big improvement.
