Scorpion Carbine or Ruger PC carbine?
« on: July 30, 2019, 10:19:05 AM »
My daughter wanted to shoot a rifle but didn't want much recoil,  so we rented a PC carbine and had a great time at the range.  Now I need to buy a carbine....

My first impulse was the Scorpion, but the Ruger costs about half as much.

Scorpion:
CZ!
Looks cool
Easier takedown for cleaning
Lighter/Better balance?

PC:
Cheap
Better trigger?

For a fun-only platform (no suppressor, no SBR, no competition) which way would you go?  Incidentally, I dont own a Glock or a Ruger, so I'll need all new magazines for either gun.

Is it going to sit on a bench all the time or will it be carried?
Length of pull-big factor for my 2 sons as they started pretty young and being able to grow into it is a consideration.
Heavy trigger weight=fatigue and inaccuracy
Ease of operation-which manual of arms will she understand better-with an emphasis on safety. Charging and clearing-which is easier?

Mags like you said are a wash-glock mags are plentiful and cheap and scorpion mags are inexpensive.

The Ruger has a growing aftermarket so that good. The cz is out of the box more adaptable and versatile. Plus and minus to both. Is this platform going to help her operate other firearms in the safe?

My suggestion is see which one she like more-operation and use wise. Address any shortcomings or adapt based on her selection.

I went with the Scorpion and have no regrets.   I mounted a Sig Romeo5 red dot and HBI trigger spring upgrade.   It's a blast to shoot and very accurate.    I shoot it in IDPA competitions and  regularly shoot 0 down courses with it.   If you go with the Scorpion, you will have a solid carbine.  Having said that, I see lots of competitors shooting the Ruger and shoot well too.   The $500 you save buying the Ruger will pay for the optic and lots of ammo.
I don't think you'll be disappointed either way.

Have you considered an AR 9? PSA makes one, yes it is cheaper than a Scorp Seeing one with the SB brace for $550.

Unless you want a scorpion, the Ruger may very well be a better option if for no other reason the price.  The ruger is also a takedown rifle which could be handy.  Both are well known to have pretty good accuracy and should be reliable enough to have fun and not ruin a range day.  Cant go wrong with either

I've never shot any other 9mm pcc but I was surprised how punchy the evo actually was.

I have both the PCC 9mm and a CZ Evo carbine.  If I could only have one straight out of the box, it would be the Ruger.  It has a better factory trigger and it is a takedown which I intentionally bought for camping etc.  Another reason is that you can also use  Glock magazines in it.  I use a Vortex Strike Fire on this one and it is very easy to shoot out to 50 yards with my old eyes.

While now the Evo is easier to shoot it involved buying a CZC trigger pack and short reset disconnector.  Now the Evo has an excellent 4#-4.5# trigger. I use it for informal shoots at the gun club and target practice.  It is easy to shoot with a Vortex Venom out to 50 yards with my old eyes.

Both are easy to clean and maintain.  I don't have any complaints about either, but if the Ruger is "Limp Wristed" it will not cycle properly.  But I suppose that is normal.

The most important critic and evaluator, my 10 year old son prefers the Ruger.  He had his choice of the Ruger and the EVO and chose the Ruger every time.

Good luck and you can't miss with either IMO.

For your daughter?  Yeah the ruger or even the hipoint.   But trigger is fine on the evo with a $10 hbindustries spring and ten minutes with buffing compound and Drexel with soft cotton wheel.  Just did mine and is night and day difference.

Another difference is the configuration of each gun. The ruger has a more conventional stock.

I looked at both, and bought a Scorpion carbine, it's alot of fun, and I would'nt sell it, but, I will say this.. In addition to being able to take it down, looking a different videos showing a detail strip of the PC carbine, I think Ruger is planning on caliber conversions down the road. The bolthead, for example is held on the bolt with two pins, and are easily removable, as is the extractor, so,I can see a possible conversion to .45acp, by simply swapping boltheads, extractors, changing recoil springs, snapping in a mag adaptor, and snapping on a barrel.. They might even offer a kit for 10mm, although I think that would a bit much for a straight blowback action, ditto for .45 super,  but .45acp, 40 cal conversion kits might be possible..  And, all of these could use readily available Glock mags.

If ruger has a 45acp PCC first, I will buy it.

If the scorpion has a 45acp first, I will buy it.

Both have pretty good reputations.  I wouldn't feel real bad with either one of them.

And both have been getting a lot of aftermarket support too.

Ruger does make some pretty good stuff, myself this year alone I've bought 3 Ruger revolvers, a .38/.357 match champion, a sp101 stainless with a 3" bbl in .38 spec. And a Stainless Vaquero in .45acp, 3 3/4"bbl, birdshead grip. The sp101 needed some help as it was pretty rough out of the box, a M carbo kit and some polishing made a world of difference, the other two were fine out of the box.. but yeah, A .45 Scorpion would be fun, honestly, I don't see why it can't be done..

I own both

I use my Scorpion carbine in competition. So easy to clean. Single point sling mounts easily. Cheap mags. Fragile mags. Safety issue that rubs the upper part of the trigger hand but that can be corrected with a different grip or safety lever.

Ruger PC Carbine. No single point sling mount point, so I have to go around the grip. Love Glock mags. I've got a 19101 so it's legal in all 50 states. Just a little less recoil because of the bolt design. Much more difficult to totally field strip. More fragile, easily lost internals.

Has your daughter tried out a scorpion yet?   I recommend her trying it first.  Then if she’s 50/50,   Decide if cost is a major factor?  If yes.  Go Ruger.   If not and she’s 50/50.  What does the parent want more?  If the parent favors the scorpion, u can justify it as your daughters training tool and get the benefits of using it.  :)

Fun factor will go to the scorpion. Though the ruger is cool too. The scorpion just puts a grin on those who shoot it

My mother (88) has the Ruger PCC and loves it.  But, she really likes the Scorpion too.
If you buy the Ruger, get the takedown version.
If you buy the Scorpion, change out:
