VZ61 Magnetic Picatiny for RED DOT (3D Print)
« on: August 10, 2019, 11:14:19 AM »
Hey,

With lack of accessory support I had a coworker whip up a 3D print with success. The iron sights are real hard on my older eyes. VZ61 screams for a red dot.

Yes you can compromise and use the scope mount on the front end. I just think those look odd, like a victim of a Democrat ban attempt.  ;D

2 small earth magnets front and one larger in rear. The sight and ribs of the upper help with securing. Holding downward is not an issue. This version side to side is not either. It takes force to pull off.

I didn't standardize where i benched and some shots are from standing. So yes I could present a better target. This was normal goofing around, mores to see if this would work.

This was tested on .22lr kit, standard cheap ammo. It held rapid fire and also pulled it on and off in between mag changes. It maintained zero well zero enough. I  say zero enough as I didn't bench it from the exact spots, use target ammo etc. I was happy with and being in the black.

25 yards with NRA 22 target is what you see below. Out at 75 it had groups but not calibrated and not being able to see didn't help. This could make that distance with a magnified dot. Certainly has fun potential at larger steel distance targets.

(I may have to consider what is a good distance to zero a .22 out to 100) Yes this has potential.

One issue we see is that .22 upper was slightly (.5mm or so) wider than the 32. Although they are supposed to be the same. I think their may be slight differences in uppers during fabrication. Not by much, but with the home made print we didn’t want to push the flex points on the legs much. Going for try 2 and see how 32 holds up.

In the end it’s a great improvement.

I like the idea but it sits quite high for a PCC. Height over bore is a bigger issue for me when you push out the range a little.

What do you think of mine?

I like that! If they were available before I set this brace up I’d probably have one. I need to get an AK pistol to find a home for it lol.

It seemed like the 3D would be high, but it sits about perfect height with the brace for me. I don’t have to crouch down to see it. It works at this point and would probably be a nice fit for SBR owners with the  original stocks.

I do like the Custom Smith option though. It’s nice to see the platform is getting a more  support with accessory options. VZ61 is made for a red dot.

By the way LCPL. Semper Fi?!

I created this because my custom smith one broke in 30 seconds of getting it and the bleeping optics rail ripped right off.  Mine is going to be 6160 and solid.  This is just the 3d printed test part, the machinist hasn't started yet.  Probably get him going on a run next week.  I'm going to do a run of universal mount of the same things next.  This one does RMR, FastFire and a 3-slot M-Loc for anything else.

I'm working on a front end solution too, but that's like 60 days out, more if my stuff for the Sten project comes in, lots of people want those binary triggers for their Sten builds, lol.  I'm sick of the lack of product support for some things so I'm making my own, lol.

Also, yes, Semper Fi.  Got out as Sgt and I miss my Abrams everyday.

Happy Birthday 8)

I did not realize yours was a 3D print! I assumed it was the offering from Custom Smith. Question: are theirs not aluminum? I assumed they were. Czech point said they had plans in the works down the road but focus was on the VZ58 line and would be a ways out. So who knows when. More  would be welcome and long over due. Keep us posted.

I was not impressed by the 3d printed product from custom smith and I wanted to be able to co witness too.  I have some PKM and Sten projects going right now too.  My goal is to start support for the smaller platforms the big don't want to waste their time with.

Mine is just 3d printed for testing but its going to be a milled product in the end.  the cost is going to be higher because it has to be.  I could see a 3d printed version for 40-50 dollars, but it needs to be a metal part.  I'm actually working on a steel charging handle as I type this also, the custom smith one is aluminum and mine is already showing stress.  not going to be fancy, its literally just going to be a stick of steel off the side.

Redo on the design and an extended CH design fresh off the 3D printer, taking them to the machine shop tomorrow for pricing, got myself all excited.  What do you think?  RMR and Fastfire fit perfectly, I screwed up the RMR mount last time.
