First Gun Purchase: P-09 or Phantom?
« on: August 16, 2019, 08:49:05 PM »
Looking for a little advice to put things to rest in my head, ha.

This will be my first gun purchase.  I am relatively new to firearms, but I've tested a few brands and models and hit it off with CZs.  I've been advised to start with a full size pistol before moving to a CC weapon.  Makes sense to me.  I settled on polymer over metal.  This will be a range toy, home defense weapon.

I am too inexperienced to notice subtleties that gun enthusiasts can identify but I enjoyed shooting both the P-09 and the SP01 Phantom.  I can barely discern a difference between the two however.  Trigger pull and sights I'd say P-09.  Overall fit in hand, I'd say Phantom.  The P-09 has the hammer safety which cant be bad for a new shooter.  Mags are less expensive for Phantom.

The MSRP of Phantom is higher than P-09, but in the current market the selling prices are the same.  Actually, the Phantom is slightly cheaper.  I dont know if that's just supply and demand or if the P-09 is better.

So I am a bit stuck.  Is there a glaring difference between the two that would make one a better fit for a new shooter than the other?  Thanks in advance!

I think there’s more aftermarket support for the P09. That’s something to consider.

If you decide you want to improve the trigger late on,  ultimately the Phantom has more potential. I would choose the one that feels better in hand. Both are great guns.

For CC , I carry P-09 W/ Red Dot sight in an Alien Gear in the waistband holster.
Whoever told you you can't carry a full size pistol is way wrong. thousands of people do it every day, skinny, fat , tall and short. I'm 5' 9 1/2 " 165lbs .
Full size  no prob .
And unless you live in an area where printing of your pistol isn't even allowed, Keep Calm and Carry On nobody even recognizes what's underneath your shirt. 50% of the time I open carry and here in Pennsylvania probably less than 1% of the people I encounter along the way might say something, usually " what kind of pistol is that".
And whatever you carry is your home defense pistol. By the way I love your choice of pistols.

I'd recommend the Phantom, since the P09 mags are proprietary and you wouldn't be able to use them with your other CZ 75 variants.

I voted P09, simply due to the flexibility it offers as you grow in using it. It can be either a decocker or easily converted into a manual safety.  I find my P09 superbly accurate, and has seemingly no recoil.

A very good gun for someone new to handgunning who wants DA/SA.

That said, the phantom is a great gun too, you can’t go wrong with either

I’d go with the Phantom for the same reason stated below. I could use the same mags with my Shadow 2 and probably with my CZ Compact if I had too even though they’ll stick out.

I'd recommend the Phantom, since the P09 mags are proprietary and you wouldn't be able to use them with your other CZ 75 variants.

By the way. I just purchased a Phantom on Gunbroker brand new for $350 plus $30 shipped. Brand new and the seller has more. You won’t find a better deal than this.

It would for me.
To be clear though, out of the box the omega trigger(P09) will likely be smoother but is less tunable than the Phantom trigger. The P09, even with tuning will always have a longer reset and a rolling break compared to the crisp break you will find with a 75(Phantom). This is all a matter of preference. I had a P09 full of Cajun parts and still didn't care for the trigger feel.
