I need lighter springs for my p-07 cheap mod?
« on: September 19, 2019, 08:03:10 PM »
I'm running a p07 suppressor ready with a large can and some really light 9mm reloads. I need them light so they won't go supersonic in my ar9's longer barrel. So the p07 works pretty well, but I do have some cycling issues. I think a slightly lighter spring would do the trick.

But also I'm cheap.

Is there any reason I couldn't just get a knife/sandpaper and remove the flare on the front of the guide rod that keeps the spring captured, then take off a little spring at a time  until I have proper cycling?

Some may scoff at this but it's exactly what I did with my first P-07 a few years back.  It was sprung pretty heavy from the factory and would fail to eject quite frequently.  My P-09 was flawless right out of the box.  I also noticed sided by side that my P-09 was noticeably easier to rack.
I took about 1/2" off at first, then a little more later.  I think I ended up removing about 3/4" in all and it's run like a champ ever since.
If you go too far, it'll launch the brass into the next county, but a new recoil spring is quick and easy to get.

It worked for me, but like I said, others may recommend against it.  My justification was that I wasn't making the gun any less safe by doing so.
Please note (disclaimer) that I am not a gunsmith, and my actions and intent do not reflect the actions or intent of this forum in any way.  Did that sound relatively professional and legal????

Let us know what you decide and the results.

You're using lighter loads because you want it subsonic because you're using a suppressor oh, so you're going to cut the spring to accommodate for that.
Question is will you be putting too much pressure on a now lightened spring on the gun if you go back to full power ammo ( not using the suppressor) and now have a lighter spring that the gun wasn't meant to run on. I could be wrong but then again I could be right,JMHO

I've never used full power. I've got a dillion 650 and I just crank them out. I don't think I have ever purchased a factory 9mm load. Also, I don't think I will need to go much lighter.

I hear a glock 19 recoil spring assembly will drop right into a p07. looks like I could get a g19 oen assembly for $7 at midway..... https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1004280527?pid=923568

No, he's running very light loads so they don't go supersonic out of his PCC. This makes them too light to cycle the pistol.

Yes you could reuse the old guide rod.  Cutting the spring will increase the spring rate, but the reduction in preload will give you a net result of a lighter spring.  Chances are you could clip a few coils and be fine.  Since it’s hammer fired, the hammer provides more resistance when the slide is moving backward at the beginning of the recoil stroke.  Worst case, you clip enough coils for the slide to travel freely to the rear, but there might not be enough preload to fully close the slide.

would I do better to try and slip coils on the hammer spring instead? I'm running cajun's GOld hammer spring right now.

An alternative:  you can always leave the slide locked back for the most appropriate gun for an extended period. That will degrade the spring a bit and weaken it.  (How long is an extended period?  It depends on the spring, but I'd start with a week or two, and see what happens,)

Is a heavier bullet a possibility?

If the Wolff spring setup for Glocks (a separate guide rod and a variety of springs) will work that might give you more options.   It makes sense to have a spare recoil spring on hand before you start.   (If none of the weights work, getting several of the lightest one will let you cut a coil to reduce the recoil spring's resistance.)

Seems to have worked fine. functionality was 100% for a mere 3 mags of 10. not exhaustive testing, but a good start.
