For any of you with an interest in the M1A/M14/M21 Sniper System, here's a review on the most recent rifle to join my collection.

Excellent review! I would love to have one of those. First rifle I ever shot was an M1A and I thought I separated my shoulder because I wasn’t expecting that much of a recoil  ;D.

Love the platform.  My first was an SAI M1A Standard in Walnut (lots of changes now...many from Sadlak and a scope, bipod, etc.  It's a tac driver) that cut my teeth on the platform, then on to a 1979 Glen Nelson National Match (doesn't need a thing).  Of all of my rifles and pistols, I get the most fun out of shooting my M1A rifles (ok perhaps only bested by a Garand, but same family).

Enjoy!

In the Army they taught me to shoot with an M16A1 (1975/76).  In the spring of 1976 I shot an M14 and fell in love with it.  TRW 1490317  (you know how it is, you sign it out and back into the arms room every day it's hard to forget the serial number, even after 40 years).

Shot it at Ft. A. P. Hill and knew I had to have one.  I've had that M1A since 1978, or early 1979.  One month's pay for an E4 in those days.  Seems like it was about $495.  Mine never did shoot to suit me.  Got a lot of experience testing different powders and bullets and doing stuff like weighing bullets (waste of time weighing Sierra match bullets), weighing empty resized and trimmed cases (never figured out if that was worth it), outside neck turning brass to get uniform neck wall thickness, playing with bullet seating depths, using motor mica to make resizing the inside of the neck less stressful on the brass, weighing powder charges, etc., etc., etc.

Killed all my deer with it (one shot kills) in the WV mountains (when you're in your early to mid 20's an M14 ain't too d__n heavy.  As one of my wife's uncles said about his Korean War experience with the M1 Garand, "I only remember two things about the M1.  It was heavy and it killed good, it killed real good."  The M14/M1A is that same story.  The rifle goes bang and deer drops right there.  Never had one run, never had to track one down (did that for a buddy one day, what a pain in the butt.)

Then I bought a darn rack grade Greek return M1 Garand at the CMP North Store and it shoots rings around my M1A.  It's what put the M1A in the safe.  The rack grade is butt ugly, but man, with that LMR barrel it sure does shoot good.

You know, they've been "working" on the cartridges for the M16/AR15 since the 60's trying to make them more accurate at long range, make them penetrate better, make them kill better, etc.  The M1, M14, M1A have been using the same bullets for decades to do all that (well, maybe not match accuracy but did you ever read about the Marines shooting across those 800 and 1,000 yd. wheat fields in France and wearing out the attacking German infantry?  They killed/wounded so many Germans with off the rack iron sight bolt action rifles and issue ammo that the German commanders told their higher command that they were facing a "battalion of snipers."

A lot of people don't "get" the M1A (or the M1 Garand) but there's something there you just don't get when you handle/shoot an AR15.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

I couldn’t have said it any better than that!

He did say that well, and he's right. A.P. Hill, been there myself, in an OD uniform- not scouts.

Nice review Howard
Love that Rifle
Have you named Her yet ? ! ?
I have my Loaded mounted in an ArchAngel too
Her Name is; Marianne
Sexiest B!+<# I've ever known
Quite accurate out to 500 yrds, even with the (inexpensive) Sightmark Tactical Scope and (modified) M-2 BiPod

Also;
My Loaded came with a 5.5 lb Trigger Pull, on an RCBS (Analog) Gauge
I added an H2Omans Trigger Shoe
This helped lower my Finger position and now the Trigger is a consistent 5.0 lbs

I couldn’t have said it any better than that!

I'd have to say; (even though mine is in an AA Stock) Handling a true "Wood and Steel" Rifle is worlds apart from handling (even) the same Rifle in a Plastic or even a Synthetic Stock
There's just something about feeling that Wood, the Weight ....
So tell me again how Trump was worse then the 8 years before .... AND what's coming after HIM !

Bottom one is my 40 year old M1A.  I put that synthetic stock on it when I got into the Appleseed thing about 2005 or 2006.  All the hunting, shooting, etc. prior to that was in a wood stock with no sling.  The US Army didn't teach sling use in the mid to late 70's, even for M14's (I suppose because of issues with the skinny barreled M16A1s - didn't teach bayonets/buttstrokes, etc. either).

Top one is the M14S I bought my youngest son when he was having issues with his FAL (guns are tricky things sometimes and when people modify them a perfectly fine operating gun can be a bear to figure out and fix).

Even today, when I see an M1A at the range/gun show that is missing the bayonet lug it looks "off" to me.  Then I realize what's different about it.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Boot camp in '66 introduced me to the M14. So easy to shoot expert I really enjoyed it. Still have a desire to own one.  Never got the chance.  When I prepared to deploy to Vietnam our company was qualified with the M16. Never forgot the noise of the buffer spring the first time I fired it. Barely managed to shoot expert with the 16.

I do own an inexpensive AR now, but still not crazy about it.

Good video and some nice rifles on this thread. I have the Socom16 model. I have had it for several years now and love it!

I just missed out on one of those this past weekend at a gun show. Was trying to get the guy to come down a bit and walked around the show some more, when I went back by it was gone- he had got his price for it.

How does that short barrel work out (noise)?

I will not lie, it is loud. However, it is not any worse than all these SBRs people are using these days. I use mine for shooting hogs and it is perfect. My buddy in the military bought it when he graduated the Q Course and selection. His plan was to use it for 3 gun, but quickly switched to an AR. When he forst bought it I told him if he ever decides to sell, to please offer it to me first. Well, years later he decided to sell and contacted me. I met him when he was on his way to Ft. Bragg and the rest is history. Gave him $1000 even for the rifle and 6 mags. The front tritium night sight is dead these days, but not a big deal for me.

I'm still kicking myself for missing out on that one last week. Oh well, keep looking I guess- just wish they weren't so expensive these days.
