Mossberg 930

Looking hard at the Mossberg 930, watching YouTubes, et al, and thought I'd ask whether anyone here has experience with this shotgun, good or bad, that they can share?

My brother-in-law has a 930 he purchased brand new. Overall it seems to be a pretty good gun. The one time I saw him shoot it at our club range it he had a couple of misfeeds. Not sure if it was the ammo or the gun. That did influence my decision when I picked the Beretta 1301 tactical as my home defense shotgun.
In dog beers I only had one.

Have a 930 JM Pro. Failure first go round with slugs. Had to send back  and got new trigger housing and internals. Also new gas system. 1st year of using it after this in 3 gun it would not cycle slugs at all. It would however cycle birdshot. Next season cycle slugs fine. Issues arise when it’s filthy. Will replace with a Stoeger M3K eventually. Thank goodness I have a built SuperNova Tactical as a backup. Will likely sell it or trade it in when I am ready for the M3K

I bought a 930 SPX about a year ago having reading a lot about how poorly it was made and performed. I also read some people loved it and had no problems.  I figured if it didn't make me happy I'd spring for a Benelli M4. Granted most of what I read was posted in early days of SPX production. Apparently mine was made in 2018 after Mossberg remedied the situation. I did change out the spacer tube to a OR3GUN spacer tube and changed out the magazine follower but that's all I did. I have shot 00 magnum buck shot and light #8 loads with it and not had any failures to cycle rounds. At first before the first hundred rounds I had 2 light primer strikes which failed to fire. I don't know really how many rounds I have run through it but more than 300, I never planned on doing anything with it except shoot it for fun.

It seems to me that what I'm reading here is somewhat typical of at least the SPX, some are great, some are not. As the other poster implied keep it clean.

I DO look like my avatar!

I had a 930SPX and other than being ammo picky, it worked well.  My nephew bought the same model and had the ejector shear on the first round ever shot through it.  Instead of having him send it back,  they sent him two ejectors but the are supposed to be peened in place so he held off on getting someone to install them.  Then, after a move and a couple of deployments,  they ended up getting lost so the gun sits in his safe with a total round count of 1

Okay ???  First, thank you all for your feedback and candor.  Very glad I asked.  I have an old Springfield Savage 67-F pump that my father bought me when I was 12 (early 70's).  It runs flawlessly and is in beautiful condition.  Was thinking about the 930 as a major step up for moderate investment.  However, that doesn't seem to be true given what you guys have written.  I'd love to try 3-gun, but there's no place within an hour where I would be able to practice.  And, if I decide to take up this sport, it will require an investment.

Look up rules at the 3 gun organizations you wish to compete in. A standard configuration extended mag tube semi auto shot gun will put you in a different class than a mag fed semi auto. Pumps may be a different class. Running optics maybe a different class-then you want to make sure your handgun and rifle are in the appropriate class.

My brothers 930 JM pro has not skipped a beat. I can run mine fast with dual loads (still practicing quads) only mod are a welded lifter, opened up magwell and a hi viz low drag follower.

My 930 SPX was not great and I didn't keep it for very long before selling it to get a Benelli M2.  It was very picky about the ammo that it would cycle reliably and I just didn't care for the tang-mounted safety at all.

Owned both a 930 SPX Tactical and a JM Pro, both worked well with Winchester and Federal bulk box ammo. Pro had 22” barrel and handled beautifully in light competition, sorry I sold it. Tactical was great for what it is but found I preferred a simpler, less “accessorized” stick  8)

930 is a solid shotgun. If I recall, pre 2018 built guns saw feeding issues from the factory which resulted in sending it back, or upgrading the failing pieces. For the money, I’m not sure that a 930 JM Pro can be beat.

Do yourself a favor and check out the Franchi Affinity. It’s made in Italy by Benelli with a Benelli bolt and a few slightly different parts. I got mine new for around $500 on GB, and never a single failure. My wife also shoots clays with it and loves it because it’s light
