SP01 shooting low and left?
« on: November 03, 2019, 01:32:18 PM »
I had my sp01 worked on by a local smith.  I use it to shoot uspsa.  Installed a cgw pro kit and replaced sights with a set of Dawson fiber optic front and rear.
I am not the worlds most accurate shooter but I think it shoots low and left since the upgrade.

Bottom left grouping is at 9 yards aiming for center red dot.
To left grouping is at 12 yards aiming for top center red dot.  May have to take it back to him to make some tweaks.

If you are sure it's the gun and not the shooter, just move the rear sight to the right about a 1/16".

I had a day at the range start out that way - with no changes to the firearms.  It turned out to be my brand new shooting glasses!  They distorted the image just enough that where I thought the center of the target isn’t where it was.

Did you buy the sights directly from Dawson? If so, go to his website and read his "Perfect Impact Promise". Windage is a simple drift adjustment,  but elevation requires a different height front sight if the rear isn't the adjustable type. If you zero based on Dawsons procedure,  he'll stand behind them. I believe you'll need to check zero at 20yds.

First step I would recommend before reaching Dawson Precision is to make sure that this is not a shooter's fault.
Try "SnapCap dirll" first, ask someone to load your magazine, so you won't have idea how many live and dummies are loaded.
Shoot in 6 yrd, 10 yrd, 20 yrd and see results.
Do these distances again with live ammo only.

Now if you see you shoot low left - contact Dawson.

Hope it helps.  ::)

Is this a standard manual safety SP-01?

Which Dawson rear sight did you buy?

What height is the front sight?

What weight bullet are you shooting?

Can you have another skilled shooter sight in the gun to see if the results are the same?

9 times out of ten it is the shooter . Different sights different  POA POI . Grip and trigger pull critical for shot placement . I would seriously look at my shooting skills before blaming the pistol . With my glock I had to push the rear sights a bit over to the right to make it work for me . It is also amazing how much our hands move when shooting a pistol . Shooting with a red dot showed me that . Most top notch shooters can hold a gun amazingly still . Even a little movement can throw a shot way off , like flinching or twisting a tad when we pull the trigger .

Thanks guys.  I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if it was me.  Few more data points.

I shot the gun off my sandbags set on the bench so I feel had a steady platform and to minimize any impact of my shooting skills.

The rear sight is not adjustable.  I will need to get the model of the sights from my smith.

I took a pistol class with this gun about a month ago and the instructor who is experienced and is a way better shot also felt the POI was off.

I installed the Dawson sights on my P-01, and I did have to adjust them for windage. Without anything but my eyeball, it took me a couple of times to get them right. But the height between the sights appears to be right on for me.

310-221

124gr from xtreme bullets

I had the gun smith adjust the rear sight and it seemed to have helped some.

Going to the range this weekend and will report back.  Thanks everyone!

Just look at your sights for mechanical alignment.  If they look aligned in the slot, then it is the shooter.
I assume you are right-handed?

Yeah right handed.

I was wrong about the rear sight.  It is adjustable and my smith was able to move it slightly which corrected the windage.  Will reshoot this weekend.

310 is not a height adjustable sight. Windage adjustable by drifting the sight. Height adjustment would require a different front sight.
When did it change from "We the people" to "screw the people"?
