Polishing compunds/paste, liquid, gel, space goo
« on: November 03, 2019, 07:40:49 PM »
I searched, said no info.

What are y'all using to polish up your weapons? Ramp, trigger mechs. Hammer mechs, sear. etc.? Use to use simichrom (think that's right) mag (aluminum) polish, polishing rouge with a fordum and wool bullet polishers. Heard about something called flitz, or fitz, maybe bleepz. I don't know. There was this stuff my dad got in a pint size can. Can't remember the name. Was used to polish molds like coin molds for proof coins. Searched for it, pretty sure it was diamond paste polish. There was a bunch of stuff on Google, but nothing jumped out at me. Noticed they sell it in these little syringes now. Anyone use something similar?

There was a mint in S.F. My dad's brother worked there, or a friend worked there. He gave him the polish when he came to Kalamazoo to visit. He wanted my dad to polish the valve covers on his 1930s or 40s continental convertible. My uncle had that car til he died. Supposedly it belonged to Some movie star. All original til 78. He brought it to our house in Crown Point from California to have my dad fix and paint the fender. My dad did body work, paint, and also mechanic work. My dad was like Picaso with body work. My cousin wrinkled it while she was learning to drive. It was parked in the garage.

Are y'all using expensive machinist grade equipment or Amazon tools? Like a Fordum flex drive, or dremel-ish tool? Expensive stones or Amazon? $$$ rifflers or ยข rifflers? Etc.. Etc... And so on?

I got a nice set of stones for $50. Couldn't believe their co. was still around. Not that they're bad. Just some places don't stick around because of places like Amazon, CHINA!!! India, etc.I

Well let me know what y'all use. And about your tooling. I haven't had a fordum for 30-40 years. My dad gave it to me.

I went to Amazon thought I d search for engraving tools. Seemed simple enough. Never knew them by any other name. They showed me a bunch of electric engravers. I used a set of tools in a wood box. Also from my dad. Never engraved guns. Screwed around on metal and wood. Thought maybe do some hot rod pinstriping type engraving on a slide. Was just going to see if I could still do it. But I got disgusted, even searched for hand engraver. They showed me the same thing. So now I have to do a search to find out what they're called. It was written in the side of the box but never really paid attention. Hell I was 8-10. Used them when I built models. It was a cool effect under the paint. Dad taught me. Anyway before this becomes the 11thhundred chapter in this novel I'll go do something else for awhile.

Some people use Mothers mag polish, some use Flitz. It really doesn't matter all that much. I'd suggest looking/searching for some of the tutorials in the gun smithing subforum. Lots of info already there for your reading pleasure to occupy those sleepless nights.

LOL!!! Wasn't sure where to look. Used the search engine. Figured gun forum it had to be somewhere. It worked on most My other searches.

Thanks for heads up.

Just in case, if anyone has used any diamond compound. Please let me know. The stuff can put a shine on anything. Polished some glass once.Hey I was 8-10 and was bored. The water beaded and rolled off. Dad wasn't happy I polished the center of the front windshield. I wasn't happy either. Needed to sit on a pillow for a week.

Yeah. I did that. Actually searched diamond polish, diamond compound,  "" paste , "" polish paste, gunsmith diamond polish paste. Did all this trying to see if I recognized the label. I didnt even see it in a pint paint type can.

The realty is there's more diamonds on this planet than well ever dig up, but because someone decided " ain't that purdy" claim it was precious and we believed them. I also found it in diamond dust, but doesn't tell me if it's worth a crap of if I even need it. But it did tell me it's not cheap. They put it in syringes now and sell it by The gram.

The very last handguns I owned I had polished the feed ramp sear, everywhere there was metal on metal. That was over 30 years ago. Fairly certain I used simichrome then. Whatever the crap was gave me a headache. So I figured I'd see what was being used now, what most thought was the best and go from there. Cause I really hate buying something and it not work as advertised. I

So now I'm going to check the gunsmith thread and YouTube again to see if that gets me anywhere.

I would go with Flitz.
No because I like it.. no, I do not even use it. Looks this one works best for everyone.
BTW - I'm using Colgate toothpaste which gets the same result  :P

Flitz or Jeweler's Rouge seemed to be favored; I've used chrome polish, Turtle Wax, and 'T-Cut' cutting/polishing compound myself. All worked.

Toothpaste?!?! Seriously!?! LOL!! I'll have to try it. Maybe polish 1/2 whatever with toothpaste and other half with flitz and post some pics. I really got to try that.

Has anyone ever used auto paint polishing compound? I use Nu Finish to get scratches out of dvds. Maybe give that a try too.

If you don't feel comfortably with toothpaste, try it first. On anything that can be corrected (no needs for correction, I can promise).
I'm using toothpaste to polish everything what needs to be polished. The less expensive and always handy paste  8)

I'm not sure if "Nu Finish" leaves any coat on the surface... and you don't want anything "weird" on your gun.

Is there a grit rating on the jewelers rouge? Never used auto wax to polish anything but cars. Do you use the rouge as a final step? Or will it polish hardened steel?

I wipe it down, use just my hand and dish soap to clean it off after polishing because I was afraid the film would damage the laser optic.
