Chrono Observations - Results
« on: November 09, 2019, 07:02:49 PM »
After reloading for my shooting addiction, and loading thousands of bullets.... last weekend I finally bought a chronograph.  So of course - today I had to take it out and test my new piece of equipment.  This equipment is a Chrony M-1 Master.  It’s wired remote display reads in meters per second.  That’s OK though - I have a calculator.

The true purpose of this exercise was to figure out my ammo choice - reloaded by me - to run in a suppressed Scorpion.  I am looking for best accuracy while sub-sonic,  This search also had me chasing my tail when comparing groups at 100 yds.  I added a real scope to aid my efforts.  The only thing it helped me do is see that my previous outing with a RDS was pure lucky grouping!  I called my Scorpion a tack drive then.  Not so today!  We had a good gusting cross wind, which appeared to hurt my groups some.  I will also list my resulting group size, but apologize for not documenting it with photos.  We all know photos are more interesting,

I shot a handful of different weights, some factory and some reloads.  I shot each through my SP-01 Tactical, my Sig P290RS, and my Scorpion Evo S3 Carbine with 16” barrel.  This helped me identify the speed difference derived from different barrel lengths.  Each ammo type and gun was fired 5 times and the results averaged.  I was surprised by the differences in registered speed between shots for the factory loaded ammo.  My reloads only varied by 1 or 2 meters per foot.  The numbers are first meters per second - then feet per second.

115gr SP-01 365 - 1197

Sorry I can't make heads of tails of your data.  We have a template in the Stickies for reporting data that will help make it clear.

Sorry Wobbly.
I’ll look for the template.

This data is cut and pasted from my notes that I put on my phone.
All handloads are with Tite Group. OAL of 1.145.  All round nose Berry’s.

Type of ammo,
weight of projectile, powder charge, what it was shot from, speed in meters, speed in feet.

Group size (MOA) from Scorpion only.

I’ll look for the template and reformat.

Caliber:  [9x19 Luger]
Bullets:  [Berry’s 124gr Round Nose]
Brass:  [Mixed]
Powder:  [Hogden TiteGroup]
Max Velocity:  [1250]fps
Primer:  [Remington 1 1/2 Small Pistol]
OAL:  [1.145"]
Rifle:  [CZ Scorpion Evo S3 Carbine 16” Barrel]
Qty:  [5 rounds each, slow fired]
Weather:  [85F Sunny, 10mph gusting cross-winds]
Chrono:  [Chrony M1 Master]

Load      Avg Vel
3.2gr        1010
3.3           1023
3.4           1056
3.5           1095

NOTES
This series of loads all produced 2MOA groups at 100 yds regardless of velocity.
My goal was to be as fast and heavy as possible while remaining subsonic.
All results of 5-Shot groups were within 2 meters, or 6 FPS - with mixed brass.

NOTES
This load/projectile combo produced 3MOA groups at 100 yds.
This combo is overloaded according to recommended weight and velocity in this application.
There is no reason to pursue this load for my Scorpion.

I originally produced this load to duplicate the felt recoil of +P Defensive ammo, but stopped loading it when concerns of over-speed and over-pressure were brought to my attention.  Now that I can chronograph my loads - I can see I am right at max velocity for the shorter barrel applications.

When used in a CZ 75 SP-01 Tactical, this load produced a velocity of 1253 FPS - so right at max for this application.

When used in a Sig Sauer P290RS, this load produced a velocity of 1151 FPS.
