Modify a Stock Trigger
« on: November 24, 2019, 01:38:58 PM »
I took a stock trigger and radiused off the sides, almost eliminating the flat on each side, and recontouring the end. The trigger has a much smoother feel as you bring your finger around in preparation to fire. At least that is my take as I have yet to install it. I wanted to keep the stock look, yet incense comfort and potential trigger bite. I have not experienced any trigger bite as of yet, even with XL hands.

I was thinking of drilling and tapping the trigger to add over-travel Allen head screw before I blue the trigger. Has anyone else tried this? Pros? Cons? Material issues?

Thanks in advance.

Some people have I believe.
No issues I have heard of. The hardest part is probably the drilling and tapping. It's a curved surface and you'd need to be relatively precise with it.

I have done it. I annealed and straightened out my shadow 2 trigger and also drilled, tapped and installed a pretravel screw. Just make sure you go slow and use a drill press.

Here are some pics:
Pretravel hole drilled and tapped. I drill it using a 2.5mm bit and tapped it using a 3mm tap.

is there enough "meat" to make thread for pretravel screw?
how that screw holds? does it move?
any tips & tricks when drilling? i have never drilled thread that small...

It has about 2-3 threads to hold it in place.

how that screw holds? does it move?
It’s held in place by the opposing force of the trigger bow pushing it forward. No it doesn’t move. I also put a dab of blue loctite using a toothpick

any tips & tricks when drilling? i have never drilled thread that small...
Go slowwwww. Use a carbide bit if you have one. Makes drilling a lot easier. It’s like cutting butter with a hot knife if a carbide drill bit is used. Don’t press down too hard. Let the drill bit do the work. Use cutting oil if you have some and don’t have a carbide drill bit.

Answers in bold.

Thank you for the input. I'll be headed to the machine shop on Saturday to do a little bit of low speed drilling.

I haven't had a chance to head to the machine shop, but I did get the bluing to work on the trigger I radiused off for my SP01.

97's trigger with the same radius treatment. The bottom or foot of trigger was also rounded and smoothed.

I did not drill and tap the trigger for set screws. The pre-travel after fitting a CGW disconnector was phenomenal.

I took the picture of the triggers side by side from this top view after getting the reshaped OE trigger ready for final install. You get a much better idea of the shape from this view.

The results are very comfortable shooting. I wasn't sure how they would work out. My hands are XL and my finger fills the trigger. Amazing how the changes added comfort. I ran a couple hundred rounds through my P01 yesterday and had zero issues.
