CZ and loaded chamber indicators
« on: November 27, 2019, 08:21:47 PM »
Has CZ taken to installing loaded chamber indicators (LCI) on all new model handguns?

I have also seen them on PCR and P-09.  I do not like them.

The PCR has had an lci for years. The lci on the P-07/09 is on the extractor and could easily be removed and replaced with a standard extractor if desired. I'm not a fan of the lci but it's not a deal breaker for me.The PCR is the best all around handgun I've ever owned.

I just picked up a CZ-75D (P-01) from 2017 without one.  I am very happy with it that way.

The LCI on the PCR is an unobtrusive design, as these things go.  It is a lot better than some of these things, like the ones that look like flags when they stick up.  On the other hand, the LCI that are half-holes in the breech face and the barrel, at the point the two meet, strike me as particularly hard to see (e.g., like on the M&P9/40).

It's pretty easy for me to ignore the LCI on my PCR, but there may be times it will be useful.

And it gives the pistol an added "safety feature" for importation consideration -- 5 pts. -- under the Federal Handgun Importation Criteria.

https://www.nraila.org/articles/19990728/federal-handgun-importation-criteria

I don't know if the the PCR "needs" those points to reach the 75 point total required for importation, but that may be the origin of adding it to the pistol when it was introduced to the USA.

Why do you guys hate them so much?  I have a PCR and a 97 BD, both have LCI's, and I'm only rarely even aware that they're there.  I've had other guns with differing versions, but again, I seldom even notice them unless I check them specifically, and even then, I'll pull back the slide a little to verify.  So for me, no big deal either way, just curious why all the hate?  Later.

They're redundant and encourage laziness. If you treat every gun as loaded then the LCI is unnecessary.

There's also no industry standard for LCIs; some are very obvious and others are very minimal like on the PCR. Someone who is used to one of the huge Ruger LCIs might pick up a gun with a smaller LCI or no LCI and mistakenly think that is unloaded.

I don't get the hate either.

I was in a pretty strenuous training course where we were going through a lot of rounds, getting tired and starting to make mistakes. I was about to take a turn through the shoothouse and asked the Senior Chief SEAL instructor if he minded if I did a press check on my pistol first. He stopped, looked me in the eye and said, "you're never wrong for wanting to make sure you know the status of your weapon.' LCI's just make that easier. The PCR's is as unobtrusive as it gets and I can slide my hand across the top of the slide (even in the dark) and know the round is chambered. Its a belt and suspenders kind of thing, I guess, but I see no downside to them.

I see them as a confirmation that "Yes, the chamber is hot"

The two loudest sounds are a "click" when you expect a "BANG" and a "BANG" when you expect a "click". The LCI helps avoid #1.
