Tanfoglio Custom 90 Safety Lever Issue?
« on: December 02, 2019, 11:18:45 AM »
The other day I was replacing the mag catch spring and retaining screw and noticed that the safety lever can be pushed out of the frame enough that the safety detent could almost pop out. The sear spring is good and everything is in place as it should be. The safety issue does not affect the function of the gun at all. What I'm wondering is if this is somewhat normal in these older guns. Could it be that someone at some point may have changed out the sear cage and it just doesn't fit correctly? Also having trouble tracking down proper fitting mags for the Custom 90. I think I need Pre Series 88 15 round mags but not sure where to find them.

Normal safety lever position:

Safety lever gap when pushed out:

Gap between sear cage and right inside of the frame normally:

Gap between sear cage and right inside of frame when safety lever is pushed out:

Gap between frame and original TZ75 Custom 90 mag. Fits and functions 100%:

Gap between frame and original TZ75 Series 88 mag. Still functions 100% but larger gap.

Generally, retention of the safety is accomplished by the extension from the Sear Spring onto a notch in the shaft of the Safety.  Somehow, the Sear Spring extension is not matching up with that notch, or the notch is not present.  I would replace the Safety if that is the case.  Also, you could have the wrong Sear Cage for that Safety, that does not allow the Sear Spring extension to align with the Safety's Notch, if present.

As for the Magazines, I would be more inclined to try a standard Mec-Gar Cz75B 16 round Magazine and see if that would be a better fit.
Otherwise, I can't say.

The sear spring does fit in the notch on the safety lever like it should. That’s the only thing that keeps the safety lever from coming out completely. Do you have any suggestions for a replacement sear cage, even if I have to do some fitting? Also I tried one of the CZ75B 16rd magazines you mentioned and it sticks out also. I know I’m going to have a hard time finding a proper fit magazine but I’m gonna give it a shot.

Like I mentioned in the original post, I may have to try to find magazines to fit a first gen TZ75.
