Tell me about Phantoms
« on: December 10, 2019, 07:38:42 PM »
So I own an SP-01 and SP-01 Tactical. I'm extremely familiar with them. While I've handled quite a few Phantom slides coming through the shop - I've yet to shoot one. I've found several places to buy one brand new for well under $450. Seems like a no brainier to add one to the safe. But I'm curious to hear some thoughts form guys who own both an SP-01 or SP-01 Tactical, as well as a Phantom. Aside form the obvious like weight and polymer frame ergo differences, are there any downsides to the Phantom? Would you buy it again after owning it, or skip on it?

Interested in following this thread.
Sorry, I don't own a Phantom but I do have an SP-01 Tac and a P-01 and never considered a polymer CZ until..........I bought a P-07 just because it made an excellent Red Dot host. Wow! I'm glad I bought it. It's turned out to be a very reliable, accurate, and comfortable pistol to carry and shoot; at a surprisingly good price considering. Ended up buying another I liked it so much. (Primary did the milling, Thank You!).

Also have to wonder if the same is true of the Phantom??

Have came across quite a few YouTube reviews of the Phantom. Not one had anything bad to say, but I'd still like to hear from anyone who has owned an SP-01 or SP-01 Tactical as well and see how it truly feels compared to it's steel counterparts. Had a couple people tell me the triggers supposedly can't be as nice with aftermarket parts, although I can't understand why - it's the exact same trigger system as an SP-01 Tactical.

I have Cajun-spiced Phantom. I like it a lot. If it wasn't for the SP-01 Tactical .40, it would probably be my favorite DA/SA CZ pistol. The only thing it is really missing compared to the SP-01 is the de-cocker isn't ambi (for those who care).

I have a spare Phantom upper, so it will probably be the second slide I send out for 507c mounting.

The common comparison is Phantom vs P-09. In that battle, I prefer the feel of the Phantom.

Phantoms are really a great platform......I've owned a few over the years, actually just bought one yesterday.  The Phantoms are very well balanced, especially when loaded.  There really isn't a downside to them, the way I've described them in the past is that they are the love child of the steel 75's and the Polymer P09/P07......the Phantom really has the best that both have to offer.  I'm not much of a polymer frame fan, but the Phantom is about the only exception.  I've owned SP01 safety&decocker versions as well as Phantoms, all stock to highly upgraded.......overall I prefer the Phantom for shooting....working on the Phantom is a little more involved than the steel versions but not so much so its prohibitive to getting one, just a reality.  In fact mags, parts are identical to the steel version 75's which is a plus in my book.  I can offer more info if you need/want specifics..... ;)

I do love my P-09. But, the Omega system has limitations to how good it can get. Even after CGW or CZC parts, the Omega trigger system still doesn't give me what I would consider a great trigger. Very shootable - but not great. So in that aspect alone, I feel the Phantom would be far superior with the standard 75 series trigger system.

Thanks for your feedback. How smooth is the gun overall?  After about 1K rounds through it, my SP-01 Tactical with 13# recoil spring has felt like the slide is riding on ball bearings. I don't suppose the Phantoms feels so nice with a polymer fame?

The slide rides on a much smaller rail setup than the steel versions, I think it would be fair to say the Phantom starts out where the steel versions get to after several hundred rounds.....just smooth from the start.

I just bought one a couple weeks ago and love it so far.  I have the SP01 as well.  If you like one you will like the other.

I'm used to Glocks for my polymers but the Phantom is such a nicer feel in the hand.  I wish the made a P01 phantom too.

The Phantoms are nice.  Just a lighter version of the SP-01.

The only drawback I have seen to the Phantom is the you can not experiment with the grip sides like you can a regular 75 since you can not swap grips.

I don't particularly care for the curved trigger the Phantom has compared to my older CZ75B, but that's an individual preference.  I bought one because it was lighter then a standard cz75.  In fact I sold a transitional  to fund the Phantom.   No regrets.

If I buy one I don't plan on keeping it in there for long.

I don't understand what your saying,  "If..."   ;D    You need to have something like this......I will say, this is the smoothest shooting CZ I've had, which is saying a lot since I've owned many, it's well balanced, comfortable in the hand and just a pleasure to shoot.....like I said above a bit different to work on than the steel 75's but who doesn't like a "little" challenge  ;)

A Cajunized Phantom, to me, is about as good as a full size polymer can get.  Admittedly, I'm not a fan of polymer guns.  The Phantom is the exception.  I've owned P09s and P07s and liked them to a point.  They didn't really compare to the Phantom.  It's what every polymer gun maker should hope their gun turns out to be.  My friend who does all my upgrades for me put in an 85 trigger along with the pro package, 10x bushing and TFX Pro sights and it is simply a wonderful gun.  I've had it for years and the upgrades were incremental but the finished product is simply outstanding.  With a light/laser strapped underneath and 19 round mags she is the ultimate nightstand gun and has been on mine for years.
