Anyone try Noise-Cancelling Headphones at the range?
« on: December 11, 2019, 08:22:11 AM »
I'm thinking of buying a set of wireless BOSE Quiet Comfort 35 II over-the-ear noise-cancelling headphones for music; and wondering if they might also be effective for range use??

Anyone using these or other good ones they might recommend, or NOT ??

Thanks for any suggestions. -Vinny

I don't think they'd react quickly enough to a gun shot to be effective, and I don't think the NRR would be high enough alone.

None of regular "music" headphones will cut off gun shot's +/- 120dB .
Even smart "noise cancellation system" won't do this. Regular headphone mutes "background" sound, not separated single high dB sounds.
To mute gun shot sound you need to use NRR rated muffs or earbuds.

Thanks for the thoughts on this.
I currently use a combination of BOTH NRR Rated foam plugs AND Champion muffs with electronic 25DB NRR; yet I can adjust my right ear to still hear RO commands; however the voice audio cancels upon gunshot.

Just seeking something better if it exists.

I’m not sure if there is anything better but would like to hear if you find a solution.

I have been using the Howard Leight  impact sound which cuts off outside noise when the guns go off, no complaints.

VINNY.

I have the Bose Quietcomfort II. They don't work. I tried.

Do you want to listen to music while you shoot?

When I double-up ear plugs plus muffs; not much sound gets through. But then I can't hear voice unless I have something that picks it up electronically like the Champion electronic muffs I've been using. The mic shuts off electronically upon loud noise. The Howard Leights may be superior to the Champions. I'll have to check them out.

Thanks Cuban,
Good to know you've tried the Bose already and they don't cancel 120DB gunshots. Makes sense but I had to wonder too.  I guess my alternative for superior ear protection is maybe a better set of electronic muffs in combo with ear plugs.

The only music I like to hear when shooting is the sound of bullets ringing steel.  O0

Yes I have, and they are not effective for that purpose.

I use MSA Sordin Supreme Pro X gel with foam ear plugs at the range.  They also have a aux jack for music, etc.

I also wear them sans ear plugs while hunting.
They work well and very comfortable for wearing hours on end.

I've tried my Sennheiser noise canceling headphone with my filter ear plugs but I didn't even make it on to the firing line; not enough cutoff. I usually use Walker's over the filter plugs. They cutoff all loud noise and the Waker's Bluetooth to my phone; perfect combo.

My qc17 Bose won't do it. I also have used the HL phones for years. They do have input for music but I've never tried it.

The best electronic muffs I've owned and tried are the Pro Ears Gold.
I have them, the Howard Leights, and the MSA Sordins.... the Pro Ears have the best cancellation, but still allow you to hear conversations.  They don't cut in and out like some of the less expensive ones.

The Sordins work similarly, but I get a buzz/hum with them that I don't get with the Pro Ears Gold.

Thanks for the comparison/rating. Very helpful.
Looking at Pro Ears website, they list Pro Mag Gold ($259 with MP3 jack) or Gold II 30 ($199 no input jack but has GEL muffs).   Reviews are all very positive, except some complain the plastic headband is susceptible to breakage. I guess if you don't want them for music too, would you go with Gold II 30??
