https://ruger.com/micros/57/

Seeing it listed (waiting stock) at $610 to $675 on a lot of sites. I kinda want one to go with my PS90.

Happy New Year!  I was a bit surprised to learn that Ruger has taken up the 5.7x28 spear, could be an interesting new toy to go with my old AR57.  To be honest, the Ruger 57 size is more of a novelty range toy than a serious sidearm, even for hiking with a lightweight sidearm since the Kel Tec PMR 22 Mag already filled that role very nicely with a bit better ballistics from the 22 WMR.

The lack of firearms options and price of ammo have kept it from gaining more popularity.  Hopefully ammo prices will start coming down if there is more demand.

From a pistol length barrel the 5.7 has about triple the energy. The 22 mag is definitely not ballistically superior in this application.

This is interesting.

The cost of the FN pistol I know keeps a lot of people from jumping in; this can only help the popularity of the cartridge.  Good on Ruger.

Some will fall in love with life, and drink it from a fountain, that's pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain.

Speer/CCI has announced they will be making 5.7 ammo including a Gold Dot defense ammo. I suspect the Gold Dots will be very pricey, but the Lawman training version should be reasonable, probably about the same as Federal Eagle. I bought 1000 rounds of SS198lf when SGammo had it for $26.50 a box. I also stocked up on SS195lf and SS197sr when it was around $20 a box.

True but 5.7 has the reliability of a centerfire cartridge

The 5.7 can also be hand loaded with 40 grain .224 bullets...though it is rated a difficult cartridge to load, due to the way the FiveseveN leaves brass. I find it interesting, but not 100% sure what it would be good for, other than a range toy.

It is a niche market.  I will stick to my 9mm and 45ACP for self-defense.

Nice they brought it out, though.  Ruger is doing some great stuff.

It will cause FN to lower its price.

The .22 mag is far more versatile and reliability in revolvers and bolt and lever action rifles is a non issue. I'm not sure there is even a rifle produced and zero revolvers that fire the overpriced 5.7 but hey Ruger will sell plenty if these guns to those who are interested in it.

...yes OMG, when the bullet velocity gets into that range the "shock wave" trauma that it will cause on a target is significant. If I'm correct there is also 5.7 ammo designed to be effective on a bad guy wearing body armor too? The price of the ammo is what has limited the use of the cartridge. Most agencies will opt for a less costly alternative out of necessity. It's certainly not in my range ammo budget :-)
