Bren 2 Ms 7.62x39 11" (or) Bren 2 Ms 5.56 11"

Trying to decide between one of the two. Which one to get first? Anyone has both? Decided to get the 11-inch one to get a balance with the noise control. Sadly cannot have suppressors here in IL. The 7.62x39 seems to be a bit easier to source (relatively) than the 5.56 version.

Also, as a background have a WASR 10 UF and the VEPR FM in 7.62x39. Have a few 5.56s as well including a custom AR-15 and ARX 100. Had a Bren 805 5.56 in 11" which I had sold and regret doing that.

This is one of those religious debates. It's largely personal in my opinion.

I'm pretty deep in 556 rifles, so for me, I'd go with 556 for ammo commonality. If I was deep in 762, I'd go that route. But conversely, I've heard  people argue the opposite in case one caliber or the other becomes hard to find.

762 has better barrier penetration and deeper penetration for hunting inside common hunting ranges we get here in the Southeast. Supposedly this is why GIGN adopted the BREN 2 in 7.62x39.

556 has better terminal performance against mid-size game and two-legged targets assuming you engage inside the optimal parameters for the round you are using.

Some people complain about the proprietary 762 mags. But you supposedly can do a conversion to use regular AK mags. However the proprietary mags give you the benefit of a bolt hold open on last round.

556 can use commonly available mags already.

There are a lot of pros and cons to either way.

Easier to find mag pouches for standard mags too.

You will be able to convert either to the other.  The 5.56 BREN 2 has a sleeve/insert in the mag well that can be removed to fit the larger mags.  The insert can be seen on the bottom of the mag well in this image (https://i.imgur.com/uf14afvl.jpg). The conversion kits will consist of barrel and bolt.

InRange released a video over Christmas comparing .308 and 7.62x39.  They found at 8 or 9" barrels, both calibers in standard military loadings produced similar energy.  And discussed how at 12" 7.62x39 has burnt all of its powder, something like only 100 fps drop from 12" to 16" IIRC. 

5.56 needs velocity to perform acceptably.  11" has tremendous flash and blast and you're at or below 2500 fps, which is the velocity needed for FMJ military loads to reliably wound/fragment and tumble.

Yeah, but 556 is still a lot flatter shooting if you stretch it out.

Plus there are a lot more projectiles available.

Take a 62 grain TSX, you will still be over 2000 FPS and over the expansion threshold well past 200 yards.

We civilians don’t have JAG dictating what we can and can’t shoot with.

I absolutely adore my 11" 7.62. Recoils like a well-timed full-size AK, which is fantastic considered it's sub 6lbs. Don't feel the need to run a muzzle brake or anything. Haven't played with optics yet, just getting more range time with irons (which surprisingly came perfectly zeroed)

So far, I'd like to add a longer HBI handguard, right side safety delete (digs into my hand), and a solution for a nice stock. The factory buffer tube adapter is way too loose. Dan Haga occasionally makes ACR adapters, but sourcing an ACR stock is becoming difficult. Plus, 922r is gonna be a pain. There's also the issue of the gas piston regulator not having a suppressed setting. Might try to find someone that can drill a port in the OFF setting and nitride it.

Can you heat treat a part for a second time that was already heat treated?  People do Glock slides all the time but im not sure about the process.
