Unfortunately, mags are a legit reason.

And it'd likely be more than a tweak on Magpul's end given rock-in vs straight insert.

I had heard there was a "hack" that was done on P-Mag AK mags to make them work with the BREN 2, but it's probably a knife and file slash job that will fail right when you need it most. I hope we get enough of the BREN 2 in country in 7.62x39mm that MagPul gets interested in making mags for it.

A 7.62x39 and 5.56? What barrel lengths did you get?

I wouldn't be surprised that you can do it by cutting off the AK tabs and adding a the mag retention catch w/ full cutting or partial grooving.   But for magpul, it'd be an entirely new mold -- they don't release anything, especially on the mag end of the equation, that doesn't meet their version of perfection.

Now had Freedom Group not ran Tapco into the ground and killed the brand, they would probably make mags...  But now, you're probably left with promag as the most likely aftermarket mag manufacturer.  Who knows, maybe someone will come out of left field, but mags are expensive unless made at volume, and I don't think the volume portion of the equation is there for Bren-exclusive mags.

Promag is at least good for practice cuts to see if the conversion would work... :o

I'd think for every 556 sold there is a potential 7.62 conversion wanting a dozen magazines min? Worth getting a wish list (group buy) together to ask Magpul pretty please?

Someone needs to get the French military to contact Magpul and request mags. ;P

Do AK mag mods activate the last-shot bolt hold-open?

No, that's the one downside.

There is that one type of AK mag which had a lrbho follower, but no idea if it works here.

Would be cool if VZ mags worked.

Awesome! That is my dream. I was considering getting the 11" 5.56, but found a 9" Bren 2 S, so got that first since the S are rare. Do you think its worth it to have both? I would have gotten the 5.56 first if there were all MS models.

See how you like that S version first.  If it blows your skirt up and you're really enjoying it then yes, a 5.56 gun would be a logical step.  Its going to recoil less and will be easier to shoot if that matters to you.

IF you enjoy your bren 2 and you find the recoil impulse workable then I would say "meh" to the 5.56 unless you want to convert to bren 2's as being your primary platform of choice.  I dont really find the bren to be "better" than a quality AR15, its just different.  I originally thought that the bren would be my grail rifle since it offers quite a bit:

Full ambi
Side charging handle
Piston for suppressor use
Folding stock

My actual experiences are proving different.  The 9 inch 7.62X39 is over gassed and does not have a suppressor setting on the gas block.  The safety is stiff and way less easy to operate than my AR15's.  I really dont like how stiff it is when it comes to putting the gun back on safe.

These are all minor quibbles and I very much like the gun.  I'm excited to see it evolve but its not the grail gun that I thought it was.

I hear you on all of those issues you mentioned.  The HBI selectors make a big difference when it comes to putting the gun back on safe.  They are stiff out of the box though.

The 7.62 gun does have a bit of recoil, and may be over gassed, I'm not sure since it is the only 7.62x39 rifle I've fired.  It definitely recoils a lot more than the 5.56.  The 5.56 is a sweet shooter, barely moves when you pull the trigger.

I agree a nice AR-15 is on par with a Bren 2, in my case I've made the Bren 2 my platform of choice for the time being, so they work for me.

I'm hoping someone releases aftermarket gas plugs that have a suppressor setting drilled in them.

I honestly don't notice any real increase in recoil with the 7.62x39mm 11 inch barrel BREN 2 over my AR15...seriously. I really enjoy shooting both of them every chance I get. ;)

I ordered a 7.62x39 at 11". My motivation was one of ammo diversity. I already have an 18" AR-15, so I figured a smaller form factor and a different ammo profile fit a different role and provided flexibility. 5.56 is surprisingly hard to find up here (in Seattle) right now - sold out all over. So I've realized there's value in ammo diversity.
