Minimal tools needed for tear down?
« on: January 06, 2020, 07:49:01 PM »
I would prefer to purchase just the right size quality punches both starter and roll pin
for a SP-01 complete disassembly than buying kits with punches I'll never use.

Thanks...

Don’t forget a magnifying glass and magnetic small part locator.

Unfortunately you will find yourself using the Starter Punch a lot.  You may also need a very heavy duty screw driver if you have any staked screws (e.g. trigger spring).  Make sure you have non marring punches, dowels , and maybe leather to use if you need to put the gun in a vise.

Get a starter punch. CGW sells them.

I have had my share of cheapo punches.
No more.

My current set of punches is from Starret and they are truly wonderful. I bought a kit. I suggest buying a spare one of the smallest diameters just in case you get rowdy with it.

Buy padded vice covers. Mine are plastic with magnets to stick them to the vice itself. Very useful for drifting sights.

Oh and don't bother with those gunsmithing blocks. I have one or two. I can't figure out where to put the slide or frame so it fits exactly... And I've worked on a lot of CZ's.

The best thing I've found is a roll of masking tape. It doesn't leave marks. Pins drop into the center of the roll.

Is there a difference between the CGW starter punch and a nail setter? I have the latter 1/16” nail setter in my toolkit and a CGW Ultra lite kit arriving tomorrow. I don’t want to mangle the job but would rather get started. I’ve heard people use automatic (spring loaded) center punches as well. Any experiences?

I don't think they are much different.

I believe the purpose of the starter punch is to hit dead center of the flare to move the pin by decreasing the flare at the same time.
