Indoor Range 1/28/20
« on: January 30, 2020, 12:52:45 AM »
I brought 4 rifles to the local indoor range yesterday. Overall I'm happy with the 3 cz's. The first was a new cz 512 with a hawk vantage ir 22 wmr 4x12x40. Using fiocchi 40 gr hp, I shot 1 inch groups at 100 yds.   :). Next on the list was a cz 452 with an old Tasco 6x24 scope.  I plan on using it more for hunting, so I shot  rem viper. No good. 3 inch groups at 50. Stingers  wouldn't chamber. Cci minimags  (old box) 3/4 inch groups at 50. Cci minimags  (new box), about the same. The best shooting were the minimags segmented hp at 1/2 inch.  Last of the rimfire  was my favorite,  a cz 457 varmint  16 inch threaded barrel  with a Bushnell 6x18 rimfire. This is my in town squirrel rifle  so low noise is the  goal. All were 40gr subsonic hp ammo. Remington and cci both shot just under 1/2 inch. Eley was a little better. Fiocchi shot into a nice small cluster of 1/4 inch. The best was RWS. 5 into a single hole of .06 all at 50 yds. The last was a ruger number 3 22 hornet.  :( Still chasing a load for it. I plan on doing some work on the rifle and try again. Great day for the CZ's

I read your post but I’m not really a rifle person. I dig your avatar though.  8)

I got to meet the late great Ed Roth not too long before he passed. It was at the Houston Autorama in 1999. I was 19 and to me it was like meeting the President of the United States. He was a cool dude. 8)

Nice groups.  Very nice.

I used to think I'd like to have a #3 Ruger in something like .45-70, or a version with more powder/potential.

How many years has it been since Ruger stopped making those?  I occasionally see a Ruger #1 for sale now and then, but I haven't seen a #3 for sale for many years.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

The number 3 was made from 1973 to 1986. My 3 was made in 1978. Working on it now.

Here's the target. Top left is Remington 38 gr hp subsonic. Top right is Cci 40 gr segmented hp subsonic. Bottom left is Aguila 38 gr hp subsonic. Bottom right is Eley 38 gr hp subsonic. Center bull is Fiocchi 40 gr hp subsonic and last, above the bull is Rws 40 gr hp subsonic.
The Rws group was somewhat ruined by a eargosplittenloudenboomer next shooting bench over. Overall I'm pleased with the rifle, cz457 varmint 16 1/2 inch threaded barrel and all the ammo I was using.
