Mecgar compact mag issue
« on: March 03, 2020, 12:57:11 AM »
Has anyone experienced difficulty with the mecgar in a compact(pcr) sticking.   I bought four of the 10 round version and they all bind in the frame.   I took off the slide and grips and can't see or feel where they bind.

If does not seem like the mag release being over pressed either.  My 10 factory mags don't stick.

Thoughts?

Do they bind with the grips removed from the pistol?
Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

The factory mags are made by Mec-Gar so bear that in mind. I have 15 Mec-Gar mags for my PCR and they all function without any issue but they are also older models and mine are all normal capacity not the restricted versions. How specifically are they binding? Are they hard to insert or remove or do they just not drop as freely as you'd like?

The mags stick with the grips off the gun.   With the slide off and the mag release centered and flush on both sides there is friction when the mag is inserted near top of the insertion.   It will require a push to begin to drop but after a half inch will drop on its own.

Look at the mag brake and see if it's pushing the mag forward. If it is you can try to flatten it out or replace it with a flat mag brake from CZ-USA.

I forgot to mention there's daylight between the brake and the mag body,  that was the first thing i eliminated.

The 15 round mags in my PCR I recently acquired would not drop.  Heck, they would barely move when I pressed to mag release.  I removed my mag brake and all is good so far on mine.

Would the mags drop or hang when you had the grips and screws off?

Seeing as how the problem mags are new, i suggest running the mag in and out of your CZ a bunch of times, then look for marks on the mag tube. This should lead you to the culprit.

Another option is to remove the slide and closely examine the mag and the pistol while installing and removing the mag to get a look at what is rubbing.

There are a number of possibilitys, we need to find the source of the friction.

I just bought 4 mec gar 15rd mags and one of them sticks really bad!
Won’t drop free. It ejects about a 1/4” then stops.

having the same problem with my newly acquired P01 omega. the phantom 75BD and compact are all good. i bought a flat mag brake but it still happens. going to try another set of grips on one side and see if the inside panels are "deeper inside" maybe a little sanding might cure it

EDIT..my issue was the flat mag brake from CZC. removed it and all is well. i did manage to "crimp my hammer spring a bit though >:( hopefully no issues with that

For me it was a out of spec mag body.
I measured the lower portion of the mag body and it is .003 larger then the others.
I measured from front to back of the mag.

There can be variation in the Mecgar magazines.  As with anything else.  There is a range from okay to nope, that won't work.  Get a magazine that's a bit on the large side (but maybe still in spec) and a pistol with a magazine well a bit closer to the small side (but still in spec) and you may have issues.

Four of the 8, or 10 19 round magazines I bought a few years ago would not fit in my modified Pre CZ85.  The first 4 were great, the next four I had two that felt like a rubber hammer might be required to get them to fully insert.  Those two had no issues in my CZ75 Compacts or my youngest son's CZ75SA.  I traded him those two for two he had that worked great in the old Pre B.

Variation.  It's a thing.

Also, magazines can "swell."  I bought 3 or 4 Mecgar .40 magazines with the +2 bases on them for my CZ75B .40.  Fourteen rounds.  Great.  Not a one of them would insert easily into the new .40 when loaded with 14 rounds.  You shoved them in normally, they stopped short of seating/locking in.  So you could give them a good smack, or three, on the bottom and they'd fully seat/lock in.  When empty, they'd drop right out.  Or insert normally back into the mag. well of the pistol.

Download them to 13 rounds and they'd insert/lock in just fine, like normal.  I took the +2 bases off of them and used them on some other magazines.  Put the standard steel bases on them and they work just like they are supposed to (oh, also had to buy new springs for them as the original springs would barely start to push the follower up enough to fully engage the slide stop in the slide when the magazine was empty.

A bad piece or two is frustrating, but easy to overcome (most of the time).  It doesn't make all of the similar made pieces bad, too.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?
