Mimicing Fed HST 124gr HP
« on: April 06, 2020, 10:38:33 AM »
I cannot find any of my def ammo that I use for carry purposes.  I am way low!  Any advice on getting close to actual by reloading?
I already have 12lbs W231/10K WSP primers....just need bullet and powder load rec.

It's really very easy. If you'll use the same weight bullet and propel it at the same velocity, it will have the same felt recoil as your regular SD load. Usually you can look on-line and find plenty of sources for commercial ammo velocity. (Now be aware it may not have the exact same POI or be as accurate as the actual SD round, but it will suffice for training.)

However, W231 tops out at about 1050fps and most SD ammo is well over 1100. So you're going to probably require another powder to do this.... BE-86, N340, Unique, Power Pistol, CFE Pistol, HS-6.... something in that speed range on a Burn Rate Chart.

You tell us what powders are available to you (that's the hard part right now), and we'll give you some load data. Deal ?

RMR is still shipping its 124gr JHP, and that's the bullet I'd probably use mainly due to availability. They make those in-house, so there'd be no middle-man wait times, and they seat really good with a common RN seating anvil.

Unique works well with both 115 and 124 gr Speer Gold Dots.

Good luck finding Unique. I've also used AA# 7.

It wasn't as accurate as Unique, but will give the velocity required although at +P pressures. AA#7 is available at both Powder Valley, and Graf's as of 3:30 pm EDT.

You need 1210 fps for 115 gr, and 1150 for 124 gr according to Speer.

I'm not seeing Gold Dots available anywhere, but like Mr. W said RMR is shipping their in house JHP.

I am pushing 124gr gold dots with vihtavouri 3n37 to 1220 fps.  My data shows a 1.7 inch group at 10yds.

To be honest I haven't shot much 9mm lately.   Mostly 40 for competition.

I'm able to push 165gr gold dots to 1100fps with 3n37 in 40 for my homemade sd rounds.

It's pricey but 3n37 will get you there if you can find it.

Cheers,
Toby

I already use Precision Delta 124gr JHPs.  Will those suffice?  Have over 6K of them.  if so, just need to pick a powder that is available.  Thanks for powder suggestions.  BTW my HSTs advertise 1150 fps and they chrono very close to that when I chrono'd them.

You can get close enough feel for practice, but don't count on duplicating expansion etc.

What bullets are available that duplicate expansion?  I guess the PDs I am using will not expand.  Any gel block tests done in this forum for them?

Sorry, you're correct, the PD JHP is simply for target work. I thought you just wanted to practice.

If you need ammo to walk around with, then I'd go with the Berry 124gr Hyper Hollow Point. (There is also a 147gr version.) They've done all the expansion testing for you and they have specific load development guidelines. Plus you can buy them in bulk (250 packs) for reloading. They are about half the price of Gold Dot bullets.

https://www.berrysmfg.com/product/bp-9mm-356-124gr-hhp

I use the 124gr model for animal control and have developed a specific load using N340 (nothing's too good for my rabid animal friends) shot from my P10c. I don't have it here in front of me, but I can certainly find it if you can find the bullets.

I did some searching, and there doesn't seem to be much availability of Gold Dots, or Berry's, or any bullets right now, except for RMR, and they're saying they're six weeks out for new orders.

I'd get an order in with them before that changes.

Since I could not find any expandable 124gr bullets to order, I kept looking locally.  Found a local distributer that only sells to law enforcement/military and since I am retired military they sold me 10 50rd boxes of Federal HST for $200.  I feel much more comfortable with my def ammo stock...lots of varmits around my house.  I still am planning on ordering RMR expandable 124s as soon as they will take an order.  Also need to pick a powder yall suggested and order asap.  Luckily, I bought 10k primers late last yr.  Wobbly will my special PD 124 JHP seating anvil work with suggested RMR bullets?  Thanks for timely suggestions!!!

If you're talking about this one...

• It's a target HP, not a defensive HP

• It fits a RN seating anvil much better. It's very similar the Zero 124gr JHP in shape.

RMR is touting that bullet as a 'Multi-Purpose' bullet.

From their site...

Quote
Description
You are looking at the very first bullets to come off of our new 9mm 124 grain Hollow Point machine. We have played with many ways of polishing these bullets and finally found a way to get them done! They shoot great and they are quite beautiful.
We’ve been testing them for a while in calibrated ballistics gel and results have been very promising. It is recommended that you shoot them at 1100 FPS or more to get reliable expansion for self defense or hunting purposes.

This bullet also makes a great target round.

Check out this video of how we stack up against another manufacturer’s JHP.

Sorry, I read that as "multi-porpoise", for those fishermen afraid of being attacked by a pod of Flippers.
