A pleasant surprise
« on: April 13, 2020, 11:38:33 PM »
I was heading to my farm for some relaxing shooting and decided to play with some DG coated bullets I ordered last year.

Thought I would try the 147gr. My usual go to load is HAP 125 with 5.2 of Power Pistol at 1.055, I have found PP by far the most accurate, also have tried and liked N320.

I loaded some DG 147 with 3.6 N320 at 1.120 which puts it in the case about .291, so getting a little deep I know. Avg FPS was 975 PF 143, out of a 5.2 inch barrel.

I really have not had much accuracy with any other coated bullets and have tried many, but to my surprise, they were crazy accurate! Started at 18 yds and went out to 25 but these DG's were as accurate as the 125 HAP's.

So I just received another 500 today and I spent today loading some test loads with a little less and a little more N320 and some various PP loads to test next week.

You might try the MBC 135gr coated IDP#8 which we tested here a while back. This is a coated RN that seats out at a comfortable 1.130" in CZ pistols. It has the weight of the 147gr without the deep seating woes.

I have been using similar 135gr coated bullets. Do you remember the seating depth or how long they are?

I forgot. Luckily I have it in my notebook. Bullet is 0.622" average length.

You should see if you can get that added to the bullet length thread. The 135 gr isn't listed.

[Mods: It's now on the list HERE. Thanks.]

I might try those, but I do not think that my depth is an issue at this point.

I have found that RN bullets are just not as accurate for me, I am not looking to save money just the most accurate load I can make.

I am not like probably most shooters here, I only shoot for accuracy and best groups, it is my thing.

I enjoy slow fire from a rest and want to put every bullet in the same hole.

I do the same with my rifles and precision air rifles.

The one I am using (bear creek) is a little longer at 0.628 average. Painter, I will post it on the bullet length thread. Wobbly, I am going to post a few questions about it on the other thread you mentioned above. It's two years old but I guess it'll be okay to revive it?

Actually, I think you're in pretty good company here. I don't know of any member here that's testing ammo who's not looking for the most accurate load combination.

I probably did not phrase that correctly, I meant that I do not shoot near as much as most members here, not that they are not trying for the most accurate loads. I just meant that I am not that concerned with the cost of powder or bullets as I do not go through nearly as much as you guys do, so HAP and N320 is fine if that what works best, however if I shot hundreds of rounds at a time, I would probably not be using those, sorry if that came off sounding bad.

Jeepster--not a problem at all with how you phrased that post.  Don't worry about it, no problem!   :) :)

Some of us are obsessed with accuracy even if we don't reload!  I personally couldn't handle adding in more variables than the pistol and my physical and mental state when shooting a pistol, so I buy box ammo (that I know is accurate in my pistols) and do the best I can when I can.

Back to the subject....
The DG Bullet design simply puts a lot of bearing surface against the rifling. Their RN offerings are what we call a "blunt nose", while their 147gr is a truncated RN and succeeds through shear length.

RMR offers that same blunt nose design in a jacketed 124gr. Missouri Bullet Co offers the same 147gr in coated in 0.356" diameter. DG doesn't seem to state their diameter.

However, I'm not sure how deep you're seating these to work in a CZ. I'd like to hear more about that.

So here is where I have evolved to.

DG 147 .356 thick and .647 long

I did not expect these DG147's to have such accuracy potential, so I gave then a quick plunk test and loaded to a a safe OAL. Well since I was surprised, I have decided to give them more attention.

I redid the plunk test and came up with different results, crap.

Its funny how I am constantly learning at this, but the barrel was dirty and I decided to clean it and when I did totally different results so now only with clean barrels.

New data plunk test results 1.160 (with a .745 case) so I tested a handful with 3.6 N320 @ 1.145 and very accurate at 965 FPS (5.2" barrel 1:10 Twist)

I also just received 500 fresh Starline cases and also some Hornady 147 XTP's which plunk at 1.120 so loading at 1.105 for testing.

I have loaded about 10 rounds of each with various amounts of both DG and XTP 147 with my 2 go to powders which are PP and N320, testing all this weekend with the same new brass.

Also, I know some don't like the flash of PP, but I have never noticed it, maybe because I have never shot indoors or I am just not very observant?

Attached is 147 DG's vs XTP's.
